Football Weekend Recap

Bundesliga

It's getting to crunch time with seven games remaining in the Bundesliga, as 19 goals were scored from the past weekend. The biggest tie was the title race clash between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Bayern, who were playing without Robert Lewandowski, saw off Leipzig with a 1-0 win courtesy of Leon Goretzka. Probably the tie that decides the title. There was the Berlin Derby between Union Berlin and Hertha Berlin, which ended 1-1 which boosted Hertha's chances of staying up. André Silva scored the winner for Eintracht Frankfurt against Borussia Dortmund at the Westfalonstadion as Die Alder won 2-1, hurting Dortmund's chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Mainz and Arminia Bielefeld played out a 1-1 draw which keeps Arminia in the relegation zone. FC Köln are now in the relegation/playoff spot, losing 1-0 to Wolfsburg, two points behind Mainz, who are away from the relegation places. Bayer Leverkusen started life without Peter Bosz with a 2-1 win against Schalke, who still have just one win this season. Augsburg earned a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim, Stuttgart got a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen while Marcus Thuram scored a brace in Gladbach's 2-1 win over Freiburg.

La Liga

There were only eight games in La Liga this weekend as the Basque Derby and Barcelona's game against Valladolid are taking place this week. There were 17 goals from those eight games with some big results. The biggest result from the weekend was Atlético Madrid's 1-0 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday. Marcos Acuna scored to inflict a damaging defeat for Atléti in the title race as their gap could drop to a point, assuming Barcelona win their game against Valladolid on Monday night. Real Madrid cut the gap between them and Atlético to three points after a 2-0 win over Eibar. Goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio gave Zidane's side a strong win before their Champions League clash with Liverpool on Tuesday. Gerard Moreno netted a hat-trick for Villarreal, winning 3-0 over Granada. That takes Moreno's goal tally to 19 with Lionel Messi scoring more than the Spaniard. Huesca got a big win in their chances of staying up, with a 2-0 win over Levante on Friday. This leaves them two points of safety with nine games remaining. This leaves Elche too close for comfort, as they got a 1-1 draw against Real Betis. This leaves them 17th, two points ahead of Huesca in the relegation dogfight. Osasuna played a goalless draw against Getafe while Celta Vigo got a 3-1 win over Alaves. Cadiz got a 2-1 win over Valencia but the game was marred by alleged racist abuse towards Valencia player Mouctar Diakhaby, forcing the Valencia players to leave the pitch thirty minutes in the first half. They eventually returned to the pitch to resume the game, with José Gaya stating after the game that they were forced to resume the game.

Premier League

There were 31 goals from eight games in the Premier League as the season is now in the final third. Manchester City take one step closer to the title, with a 2-0 win over Leicester City with Kevin De Bruyne and Benjamin Mendy scoring. Liverpool prepared for their game against Real Madrid with a 3-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday, with a brace coming from Diogo Jota, who's making up for lost time following a lengthy injury. Chelsea suffered their first defeat under Thomas Tuchel, with a 5-2 defeat against West Brom. Thiago Silva was sent off which the Baggies taking full advantage with Callum Robinson and Matheus Pereira scoring braces. Harry Kane scored twice for Tottenham but it was not enough as they drew 2-2 against Newcastle United. Leeds United got a 2-1 win over Sheffield United with Sheffield player Phil Jagielka scoring an own goal. Marcus Radhford and Mason Greenwood scored in Manchester United's 2-1 win over Brighton. Fulham suffered a 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the fight for survival, leaving three points behind Newcastle United having played a game more. Southampton played a 3-2 win over Burnley with Nathan Redmond scoring the winner.

Serie A

Everyone in the Italian top flight played on Saturday with 34 goals scored. The Turin Derby between Juventus and Torino played out a 2-2 draw with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring to give Juventus a point. AC Milan also dropped points, drawing against Sampdoria 1-1. Romelu Lukaku came up clutch for Inter as Conte's side won away at Bologna 1-0. That has increased their gap at the top to eight points with a game in hand. Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata scored for Atalanta as La Dea beat Udinese 3-2, leaving them third in the table. Two points behind AC Milan.  Napoli are now level on points with Juventus with a frantic 4-3 win over Crotone. Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens and Victor Osimhen scored for Napoli as their Champions League aspirations are still alive. AS Roma and their chances of Champions League qualification have dwindled following a 2-2 draw against Sassuolo, leaving them five points off the Champions League spots. Lazio beat Spezia 2-1 beat had two players sent off. Dennis Man scored an equalizer in Parma's 2-2 draw against Benevento which doesn't improve their chances of survival as they remain 19th. Verona beat Cagliari 2-0 while Fiorentina played a 1-1 draw with Genoa with Franck Ribera getting sent off.
