Champions League Group Stage Preview & Predictions

The UEFA Champions League makes its return as the first round of group games taking place on the 6th and 7th of September. This season's Champions League is going to be very different. Due to the World Cup taking place in November, all group games will be held from the 6th-7th of September to the 1st-2nd of November. Within the space of just two months, congesting the fixture list. Here is a preview of all eight groups and where they will likely finish by November. GROUP A: AJAX, LIVERPOOL, NAPOLI & RANGERS Group A would be interesting given all four teams' changes during the off-season. The UEFA Champions League is back for another exciting season as the heavyweights of European football battle it out to become Champions of Europe with the Final taking place on the 28th of May at the Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This Champions League season will be the first after UEFA scrapped the away goal rule in the summer, meaning games in the knockout stages that remain level will go into extra time. The season also sees the return of football supporters in stadiums after last season when fans did not attend games due to the pandemic. With big business done during the transfer window, expectations are quite high for this season.   La Liga 26 goals were scored in the Spanish top flight this past weekend as we are approaching the business end of the season, with only ten games remaining. Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and, Real Madrid all won their games this past weekend, as the title race drags on. Barcelona got the biggest win of the three, beating Real Sociedad 6-1 at the Anoeta with Lionel Messi and American right-back Sergino Dest both scoring braces in a big win for the Blaugrana. Atletico Madrid kept their four-point lead at the summit of the league table, beating Alaves 1-0 at home. Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the game, which was his 500th career goal, a milestone for the Uruguayan. Real Madrid went away to Celta Vigo and, got a 3-1 win thanks to Karim Benzema, who scored two goals.   Bundesliga 20 goals were in the Bundesliga this past weekend with six teams keeping clean sheets. RB Leipzig kept the pressure on Bayern Munich in the title race, winning away at Freiburg 3-0 with Nkunku, Sorloth and Forsberg scoring. That put Leipzig top of the Bundesliga before Bayern's game against Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker . There was early trouble for Bayern when Erling Haaland scored twice for Dortmund in the first ten minutes. Bayern initially clawed back, winning the game 4-2 with Robert Lewandowski scoring a hat-trick, taking his goal tally to 31 this season. Three goals off his total of last season. Borussia Monchengladbach has been on a bad run of form with no wins in their last four games. That run continued following a 1-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, dropping down to 10th in the league table, seven points behind Leverkusen.   Serie A 21 goals were in the Italian top flight this past weekend but only three games had three goals or more. One of those games was between league leaders Inter Milan and Genoa. The Nerazzurri had a comfortable 3-0 victory with Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Darmian and Alexis Sánchez. That's now five straight wins for Inter as they are still four points ahead of AC Milan. Speaking of their city rivals, they beat top-four hopefuls AS Roma 2-1 at the Olimpico on Sunday. Goals from Franck Kessié and Ante Rebić ensured the win for the Rossoneri, after losing back-to-back games. a 77th-minute equalizer from Antonín Barák meant the points were shared between Hellas Verona and Juventus.   Premier League Six teams kept clean sheets in the Premier League this weekend with just 18 goals scored from the nine games played. It was a momentous weekend for Everton Football Club as they made history, finally beating their city rivals Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday. That was Everton's first win against Liverpool in ten years and also their first win at Anfield since 1999. It took them level on points with the defending champions with a game in hand while Liverpool has now lost four home games in a row, with a strong possibility of missing out on Champions League football next season. It was not a good weekend for Mourinho's Tottenham as they lost 2-1 on Sunday to West Ham United. Goals from Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard gave the Hammers the win, taking them to the top four while Spurs' form has taken a big hit, with only one win in their last five. Chelsea annihilated by City City continued their dominating form of latte with a hammering 6-0 win against Chelsea on Sunday at the Etihad. City went in front in just four minutes from Sergio Agüero and it was just the beginning. Pep's side scored three more in just twenty minutes which sealed the win already but it wasn't the end of it. In the second half, they scored twice with Agüero scoring from the penalty spot while Raheem Sterling completed an emphatic win, sending a message to their title rivals as they stayed on top having played a game more than Liverpool while Chelsea drop to sixth place after their worst ever Premier League defeat in history as Sarri now have to face the question. With the transfer window now shut, teams whether they did any business or not now have to live with it till May and have games coming fast with the Champions League coming back in less than two weeks. Anyway, here are the major stories from the weekend.  City cut gap to two points Manchester City have put the pressure on Liverpool as they have cut the gap two points after the defending champions beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday at the Etihad. An error from Alex Iwobi led to City's first goal in less than a minute with Sergio Agüero scoring. Laurent Koscielny shocked the Etihad scoring an equalizer to keep the Gunners in the game for about 30 minutes but Agüero scored again before halftime. City's dominance and exploitation of the flanks were too much for the Arsenal defence with Agüero scoring a hat-trick to seal the win and will wait to see how Liverpool play as they play tonight against West Ham.
