Football Weekend Recap

 Bundesliga

20 goals were in the Bundesliga this past weekend with six teams keeping clean sheets. RB Leipzig kept the pressure on Bayern Munich in the title race, winning away at Freiburg 3-0 with Nkunku, Sorloth and Forsberg scoring. That put Leipzig top of the Bundesliga before Bayern's game against Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker. There was early trouble for Bayern when Erling Haaland scored twice for Dortmund in the first ten minutes. Bayern initially clawed back, winning the game 4-2 with Robert Lewandowski scoring a hat-trick, taking his goal tally to 31 this season. Three goals off his total of last season. Borussia Monchengladbach has been on a bad run of form with no wins in their last four games. That run continued following a 1-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, dropping down to 10th in the league table, seven points behind Leverkusen. Hertha Berlin scored two late goals to win the game 2-1 against Augsburg, their first win since January with two late goals from Dudo Lukebakio and Krzysztof Piatek. Mainz was unable to get out of the automatic relegation zone, dropping points against bottom side Schalke with a goalless draw. Arminia Biefeld also dropped points in the relegation dogfight, playing a goalless draw with Union Berlin. Wolfsburg suffered defeat for the first time in nine games, losing 2-1 to Hoffenheim. The highlight of the game was Wolfsburg defender Paulo Otavio Rosa Silva getting sent off for a cynical and bizarre tackle. Eintracht Frankfurt dropped points against Stuttgart, drawing 1-1 while Werder Bremen also played a 1-1 draw against FC Koln, who are four points off automatic relegation.

Premier League

Just eight games were played in the Premier League with just 15 goals scored as we are approaching the end of the season. Liverpool's horrible run at home goes on as they lost to Fulham 1-0 with Mario Lemina winning the ball off Mohamed Salah to strike the ball past Alisson to make it six straight defeats at Anfield. This run has to end somewhere. Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw scored for Manchester United as the Red Devils ended Manchester City's 22-game winning streak in all competition, winning the Manchester Derby 2-0 at the Etihad. Leicester City remains third in the league table after their 2-1 win over Brighton with Kelechi Iheanacho and Daniel Amartey scoring for the Foxes. An error from Granit Xhaka led to Chris Wood scoring the equalizer as Burnley shared the spoils with Arsenal, with the game ending 1-1. Tottenham moved up to seventh in the table, after hammering Crystal Palace with a 4-1. Gareth Bale's purple patch continued with the Welshman scoring a brace with Harry Kane also netting a brace. Southampton won 2-0 against Sheffield United with James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams scoring for the Saints. Aston Villa and Wolves played out a goalless draw while those that watched the goalless draw between West Brom and Newcastle United will be thinking why they punished themselves watching a game that brought nothing from both teams, as they need points to avoid relegation.

La Liga

25 goals were scored in the Spanish top flight this past weekend with one game having three or more goals. That goal was between Huesca, who are bottom of the table, against Celta Vigo. A frantic game, Huesca led in the first twenty minutes before Celta levelled the game before half-time. Celta went in front early in the second half before Azulgranas equalized in the 74th minute. That lasted just three minutes as Fran Beltran scored the winner for Celta, ending the game 4-3. Heartbreak for Huesca. Jordi Alba and Ilaix Moriba scored for Barcelona as the Blaugrana beat Osasuna, keeping the title race alive. Elche got a massive win to keep their survival hopes alive, beating Champions League hopefuls Sevilla 2-1. The Madrid Derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid was played out on Sunday. Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Los Rojiblancos but Karim Benzema would score the equalizer in the 88th minute to salvage a point for Real Madrid, with the game ending 1-1, keeping Atletico top of La Liga with a game in hand. Real Sociedad have managed to put in a good run of form which continued following a 1-0 win against Levante. Two late goals from Carlos Soler and Goncalo Guedes gave Valencia a 2-1 win over Villarreal while two early goals from Real Valladolid was enough in their win against Getafe. Athletic Bilbao pushed up to eighth following their 2-1 win over Granada while Eibar suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat to Cadiz while spells trouble for their chances of staying up.

Serie A

31 goals were scored in Serie A from nine games played. Crotone won their fourth game of the season, beating Torino 4-2 with Simeon Nwankwo scoring a brace. Despite Torino clawing back 3-2, Adam Ounas scored the winning game for Crotone, keeping Torino in the relegation zone. Roma remains in the Champions League places, winning against Genoa 1-0, putting the pressure on Lazio, Napoli and Atalanta. Speaking of Lazio, they scored early against Juventus but it was not enough as the Bianconeri beat Lazio 3-1 with Alvaro Morata scoring a brace. Fiorentina and Parma played out a frantic 3-3 draw with two goals in added time with the last goal being an own goal for Fiorentina with Simone Iacoponi scoring in his own net with Parma leading 3-2. Udinese beat Sassuolo 2-0 while Spezia and Benevento played a 1-1 draw. A brace from Lorenzo Insigne and a goal from Victor Osimhen was enough for Napoli in their 3-1 win over Bologna, keeping their hopes of Champions League qualification alive. Radja Nainggolan scored late for Cagliari in their 2-2 draw against Sampdoria. Rade Krunic and Diego Dalot scored in AC Milan's 2-0 win over Hellas Verona, keeping themselves close to Inter Milan, who play Atalanta on Monday night.
