Football Weekend Recap

 Der Klassiker in the Bundesliga

36 goals were scored in the Bundesliga this past weekend with only two teams winning their games away from home in matchday 7 of the Bundesliga. One of those teams was defending champions Bayern Munich. They faced Borussia Dortmund in what is known as 'Der Klassiker', the game between the biggest teams in Germany on Saturday at the Westfalenstadion. Bayern Munich came out on top, beating Dortmund 3-2 with goals coming from David Alaba, Robert Lewandowski, and Leroy Sané, who scored his first goal in this fixture. This means that Bayern has won their last three meetings against the Black and Yellow, putting Die Bayern three points ahead of Dortmund. RB Leipzig moved to second in the Bundesliga table after beating Freiburg 3-0 while Bayer Leverkusen moved to fourth after beating Borussia Monchengladbach 4-3 with Lucas Alario scoring a brace. However, the pick of the goals from that game was Valentino Lazaro for Gladbach, scoring a ridiculous bicycle kick at the end of the game. Union Berlin's second year in the Bundesliga has been going well as the capital club smashed Arminia 5-0, taking them to 5th while their city rivals Hertha Berlin beat Augsburg 3-0. Werder Bremen and FC Koln played to a 1-1 draw while Eintracht Frankfurt dropped points against Stuttgart 2-2. Two first-half goals from Renato Steffen and Wout Weghorst gave Wolfsburg a 2-1 win over Hoffenheim with two penalties missed in the game from Weghorst and in particular Mu'nas Dabbur, who missed the chance to give Hoffenheim a point. Mainz and Schalke were unable to get their first win of the season as the game ended 2-2 with Schalke getting a point thanks to an own goal from Jeremiah St. Juste.

Serie A Action

17 goals were scored in the Serie A with a lo of deuces as six games from the weekend ended in stalemates. One of those was Juventus' 1-1 draw against Lazio on Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico. Cristiano Ronaldo scored for the defending champions in the 15th minute, also having another chance hit the woodwork before coming off the pitch due to an ankle injury. It just was not to be for Juventus as Felipe Caicedo equalized for the hosts to help Le Aquile. Aleksei Miranchuk scored the equalizer for Atalanta in their 1-1 draw against Inter Milan on Sunday. Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring for the Nerazzurri before Miranchuk leveled the scoring eleven minutes from time left. Former Manchester United and Arsenal winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored his first hat-trick in Italian football as the Armenian helped AS Roma to a 3-1 win against Genoa on Sunday. Zlatan Ibrahimović, despite being at 39 years of age, continues to be Milan's saviour as they were able to get a point off Hella Verona at the San Siro on Sunday. Sassuolo's goal-scoring exploits failed to come through in their goalless draw against Udinese, with games between Parma against Fiorentina and Torino against Crotone also ending scoreless. Spezia got their second win of the season, beating Benevento 3-0 while Napoli jumped to third in the Serie A table after their 1-0 win against Bologna thanks to record-signing Victor Osimhen.

City v Liverpool in the Premier League

24 goals were in the Premier League this past weekend with four games have just one goal or no goals at all. The biggest game in the Premier League, and probably the rest of Europe was Manchester City hosting Liverpool at the Etihad. The two teams that have won the last three Premier League titles battled it out ending in a 1-1 draw. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Gabriel Jesus equalized for the Citizens. They were awarded a penalty as well but Kevin De Bruyne failed to put City in front, knocking the penalty wide. A frantic first half, it quieted down in the second half with minimal fuss between both teams. That meant Leicester City went top of the table after beating Wolves 1-0 thanks to Jamie Vardy, scoring from the penalty spot. Again. Harry Kane scored his 150th Premier League goal as Spurs beat West Brom. Ademola Lookman will be kicking himself for not scoring from the spot to give Fulham a point, as the Cottagers lost 1-0 away at West Ham. Chelsea's six-game without conceding came to an end against Sheffield United but it did not matter as Frank Lampard's side breeze past Chris Wilder's team winning the game 4-1. Bruno Fernandes scored a brace in Manchester United's 3-1 win against Everton on Saturday with Edinson Cavani scoring his first goal in United colours. It could be a great or bad result depending on where you are regarding Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Eberechi Eze scored his first goal for Crystal Palace, beating Leeds United 4-1 while Southampton was able to win without Danny Ings as the Saints' fine form continued with a 2-0 against Newcastle United. Brighton and Burnley's unfortunate start to the season goes as their game ended with no goals.

La Liga Action

32 goals were scored in La Liga this past weekend with few joys for the away side with only one team winning their game away from home. That team was Real Sociedad, whose great start to the season continues with a 2-0 win over Granada with two first-half goals from Nacho Monreal and Mikel Oyarzabal. However, they went down to ten men at the end of the game as Sociedad defender Robin Le Normand received a red card. Real Valladolid finally got their first win of the season beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 despite Bilbao scoring late in the game from Inaki Williams. Ronald Koeman put Lionel Messi on the bench when Barcelona hosted Real Betis. He did come off the bench to score a brace as Barcelona beat Real Betis 5-2 but will be without Ansu Fati, who sustained an injury and will require surgery. A penalty from Lucas Ocampos gave Sevilla a 1-0 win over Osasuna while Huesca are still yet to win in La Liga this season, drawing against Eibar 1-1. Despite going down to ten men, Aláves were able to muster a point against Levante while Elche also shared the spoils with Celta Vigo. Goals from Paco Alcàcer, Manu Trigueros, and Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal a 3-1 wi over Getafe, taking them to second in the table. Atletico Madrid so far this season have an attacking edge to them, beating Cadiz 4-0 with Joao Felix scoring a brace. So far, Atletico have scored 17 goals in La Liga with only Real Sociedad scoring more. The biggest shock of the weekend was Real Madrid, as they lost 4-1 to Valencia. Despite scoring first from Karim Benzema, a hat-trick of penalties from Carlos Soler and an own goal from Raphael Varane ended a four-game winless streak for Valencia while Madrid is just only one defeat away from their total of defeats last season.

Player of the Weekend - Max Kruse

Max Kruse has been a staple in the Bundesliga and is now playing at Union Berlin. The German striker was at his best as Union Berlin smased Arminia 5-0. Kruse scored from the penalty spot and made two assists. Plus, he made 4 key passes, 2 shots on target and 42 touches. His experience at 32 will be vital in Union's chances of staying up in the Bundesliga this season.
