Football Weekend Recap

 Premier League Recap

The Premier League returned following the international break with eight games played from the weekend, with 27 goals scored and only two teams from matchday 5 kept a clean sheet. The biggest game from the Premier League was the Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park on Saturday. The game ended 2-2 with Mohamed Salah scoring his 100th goal for the Reds while Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his goal-scoring form for the Toffees. The game was marred with controversy, particularly from Liverpool's standpoint. Firstly, the third 'goal' which was scored by Jordan Henderson was ruled out for offside as Sadio Mané was placed in an offside position. The other was Jordan Pickford's challenge on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. The Everton keeper lunged in on the Dutchman, resulting in an early substitution. As of now, van Dijk has been ruled out for a considerable point of time as he sustained an ACL injury, altering Liverpool's chances of retaining the title. Richarlison was sent off for a reckless challenge on Thiago but the Spaniard was able to play for the rest of the game. Manchester United scored three late goals as they beat Newcastle United 4-1 while a six-goal thriller occurred at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea drew 3-3 against Southampton. Gareth Bale made his second debut for Tottenham as Jose Mourinho's side let go of a three-goal lead to only walk away with a point, with the game ending 3-3 with the last goal coming from Manuel Lazini in the 94th minute. Fulham drew 1-1 against Sheffield United with Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrović missing a penalty. Crystal Palace and Brighton played a 1-1 draw with Ross Barkley scored a late winner to give Aston Villa a 1-0 win against Leicester City.

La Liga Action

19 goals were scored from Matchday 6 of La Liga and they were some shockers to come out from this weekend. Firstly, Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat against newly-promoted side Cádiz 1-0 at home on Saturday. Honduran striker Anthony Lozano scored the only goal in the 16th minute and although Madrid dominated possession and had 14 shots, they were unable to break the Cádiz defence as Cádiz pulled off a famous win as this is their first win against the defending champions since 1991. Barcelona did not fare any better either. The Catalan club lost 1-0 against Getafe on Saturday at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. The hosts were more clinical with their shots, with four of their nine shots on target compared to Barcelona's measly one from seven shots. Their reward came from the penalty spot when Frenkie de Jong brought down Djene Dakonam in the penalty box, with Getafe striker Jaime Mata scoring from the spot. This is Geatfe's first win against Barcelona since November 2011. This is the first time since September 2018 where both Real Madrid and Barcelona lost their league games on the same day. Atlético Madrid did not care what happened with Barcelona and Real Madrid as they won their game 2-0 against Celta Vigo with Luis Suárez and Yannick Carasco scoring for Diego Simeone's team. Granada continued their fine start to the season, beating Sevilla 1-0 while Eibar played a goalless draw against Osasuna. Dani Parejo played a fine game in Villarreal's 2-1 win against his former club Valencia. It was his first game against Valencia since leaving on a free transfer and he clearly showed them what they were missing. Real Sociedad scored three past Real Betis, Huesca played to a 2-2 draw against Real Valladolid, and Elche beat Alavés 2-0.

Bundesliga Action

There weren't many goals in the Bundesliga with only 19 goals scored from Matchday 4 in the Bundesliga, with fours of those goals ending in a 1-1 draw. Bayern Munich were too much for Arminia, as the defending champions won 4-1 on Saturday with Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller scoring a brace each. Marco Reus came off the bench to score the winner in Borussia Dortmund's 1-0 win against Hoffenheim on Saturday at the Rhein-Neckar Arena. It was the German's first league goal of the season and despite being used sparingly by Lucien Favre, he managed to step up for the Black and Yellow to give them an important win against a tricky Hoffenheim side. Bayer Leverkusen won their first game of the season, beating Mainz 1-0 with Lucas Alario scoring in the 30th minute. RB Leipzig kept their unbeaten start to the season, beating Augsburg with a spectacular strike from striker Yussuf Poulsen. Wolfsburg managed to salvage a point with striker Wout Weghorst scoring in the 85th minute. Eintracht Frankfurt played to a 1-1 draw against FC Koln, with Werder Bremen playing a 1-1 draw against Freiburg. Schalke got their first point of the season, as their game against Union Berlin ending 1-1. Stuttgart scored twice against Hertha Berlin, winning the game 2-0.

Serie A Recap

In the Serie A, goals continued to pour with 41 goals from the nine games played, with only three teams winning away from home. One of those teams was AC Milan as they faced city rivals Inter Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on Saturday at the San Siro. Zlatan Ibrahimović came out on top over his younger opponent Romelu Lukaku, as the Swede scored twice in Milan's 2-1 over Inter Milan with Lukaku scoring for the Nerazzurri. The two high scoring sides of Serie A so far faced off when Napoli hosted Atalanta at the San Paolo on Saturday. The Partenopei shocked Gasperini's side, winning the game 4-1 with all of Napoli's goals coming in the first half. Napoli's record signing Victor Osimhen scored his first goal for the club, celebrating it with a shirt highlighting the #ENDSARS Movement that is going on in Nigeria. He wasn't the only one. Crotone striker Simeon Nwankwo did the same gesture when he scored in Crotone's 1-1 draw against defending champions Juventus on Saturday. The Old Lady were without star forward Cristiano Ronaldo as he was in self-isolation after testing positive for coronavirus and were down to ten men after Federico Chiesa received a red card. Sassuolo and Bologna were involved in a seven-goal thriller but Sassuolo came out on top, winning the game 4-3. Sampdoria managed to pull off a shock 3-0 victory over Champions League hopefuls Lazio while Fiorentina played a 2-2 draw against Spezia. Giovanni Simeone scored twice for Cagliari in their 3-2 win over Torino while Udinese got their first win of the season against Parma. Edin Džeko scored as AS Roma scored five past Benevento.

Player of the Weekend - Connor Goldson

The Old Firm Derby between Celtic and Rangers was played on Saturday at Celtic Park. Steven Gerrard's side pulled off a 2-0 win against their fierce rivals, winning at Celtic Park in two consecutive games. Much of that was down to Rangers defender Connor Goldson. The English defender scored twice while keeping a clean sheet for himself. He took 3 shots (2 on target), 1 key pass, won 2 fouls, made 2 interceptions, 8 clearances, and blocked 2 shots. A great game from him and Rangers as the plan to challenge Celtic for the title in Scotland.
