Football Weekend Recap

First Weekend of the Premier League

Arsenal - Sky Sports Football

The Premier League made its return for the 2020/2021 season. Given how the 2019/2020 season ended, this coming season is going to be an odd one due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the tight fixture set-up of the new season. Nevertheless, we are all excited that the new season is underway. The first game of the season was Fulham hosting Arsenal at Craven where the Gunners blasted their opponents away with a 3-0 victory. Alexandre Lacazette scored the first goal of the season, putting the ball in the back of the net from two yards out after some heavy pressure that Fulham found it difficult to defend. New Arsenal signing Gabriel opened his Premier League account with a goal. The Brazilian scored from a set-piece early in the second half, with an Arsenal victory looking more imminent. Willian also had a good debut, creating two assists. The other was a long ball which found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who put his shot in the top corner as Mikel Arteta's side opened the new season where they left off last season. Liverpool opened their title defence with a seven goal thriller at Anfield as the Reds saw off Leeds, winning the game 4-3. Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick but Leeds came from behind three times in the game as Marcelo Bielsa and his team pushed Liverpool to the brink, and will be very encouraged from his team's performance which gives an indication of how exciting Leeds are going to play this season. Wilfried Zaha scored for Crystal Palace as the Eagles beat Southampton 1-0. Newcastle United beat West Ham United 2-0 with Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick scoring on their debuts for the Magpies. Jamie Vardy scored twice from the penalty spot as Leicester City beat newly-promoted side West Brom 3-0 on Sunday while Everton started their first full season under Carlo Ancelotti with a 1-0 win over Tottenham. Wolves will face Sheffield United while Chelsea begin their season away at Brighton on Monday night. Manchester City and Manchester United did not play in the opening weekend due to their commitments in Europe last season.

The Egyptian finished last season as Liverpool's top scorer with 19 goals in the Premier League as the Reds won the League title. He started off the season scoring on the opening fixture again for the fourth straight year with the last person to that was Terry Sheringham. He scored a hat-trick in Liverpool's 4-3 win against Leeds United, scoring a hat-trick. His third in a Liverpool shirt with a powerful strike which went to the roof of the net. According to Squawka, Salah had the most touches (87), most completed passes in the final third (35), most shots (9), most take-ons completed (7), most chances created (4) and most shots on target (3).
