Manchester City defend Community Shield after winning on Penalties

Manchester City reclaimed the FA Community Shield for the first time in their history after beating Liverpool 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes with Gabriel Jesus scoring the winning penalty. Both sides fielded strong sides despite some notable absentees. City had Liverpool on the back foot in the first half, exploiting the flanks particularly Trent Alexander-Arnold, who did not have a great game, and went in front from Raheem Sterling. In the second half, Liverpool played a lot better. They forced City in making a lot of turnovers close to their defence and created a number of chances to level the game, which eventually came from Joël Matip. Mohamed Salah had the chance to score the winner but had his shot cleared off the line by Kyle Walker, forcing the game to go to penalties. Only Georginio Wijnaldum had his stop kick saved by Claudio Bravo and Gabriel Jesus scored the winning penalty as Pep's side defended the Community Shield for a successive season but also laid down a marker this season with both sides going for the title.

BVB beat Bayern for the German Super Cup

In Germany, the DFL-Supercup or German Super Cup took place on Saturday at the Westfalonstadion between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Dortmund were without some of their new signings with only Nico Schulz available to make his debut. It looked a heavy tussle which is a sign to come in the Bundesliga title race this season. Despite BVB missing their new signings, the players they already have left their mark, particularly Jason Sancho. The young English winger was exhilarating with the Bavarians struggling with his first running which got Dortmund in front, finding Paco Alcácer who finished it in the 48th minute. Bayern had chances of their own but were constantly caught out by their opponents. Sancho would eventually score Dortmund's second in the 80th minute, giving a safeguard which was needed as the Black and Yellow stopped their rivals from winning the DFL-Supercup for a fourth straight year.
