Pulisic to Chelsea makes sense

Borussia Dortmund and American winger Christian Pulisic has signed for Chelsea for a reported fee of £58 million. The player will stay in Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season as BVB are currently top of the table in the Bundesliga, six points clear off Bayern Munich.

There has been mixed reactions from the web with some questioning the fee for a player who's not in Dortmund's starting XI and why Chelsea went for another wide player instead of a striker. However, I feel the deal makes sense for Chelsea and Pulisic.

Firstly, ageing right wingers. Chelsea have Willian and Pedro who play off from the right-hand side. However, both players are over the age of 30 and it won't be surprising if one of them or both will be out of the door of Stamford Bridge by the end of the season. Pulisic would bring some needed youth to Chelsea's lineup and he been playing at a high level for some time now.

Secondly, game time. Many thought that Pulisic will most likely move to Liverpool largely due to his relationship with Jürgen Klopp who brought him to Europe but he'll hardly play at Anfield with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Xherdan Shaqiri ahead of him. At 20 years, Pulisic needs adequate game time to improve on his game.

Thirdly, he fits Sarri-Ball. Pulisic can play anywhere in attacking midfield, usually as the No.10 for the United States or as a right winger for Dortmund. A pacey dribbler, he would fit well in Sarri's game-plan. This season in the Bundesliga, he has made 1.7 dribbles per game, being fouled 1.5 times per game and has made 0.8 key passes per game. There's much for him to improve i.e. finishing and decision making but fits with the system.

Finally, marketing pull. Football is a business after all and Chelsea's signing of Pulisic is beyond the field. He's the face of American soccer and his move to Chelsea would increase Chelsea's popularly as football is growing in the States. It wouldn't be like Ronaldo's move to Juventus or Neymar to PSG but many Americans will be following the Premier League and Chelsea to see how their Captain America performs.

Youth, game time, fits Sarri-Ball and Marketing pull, Pulisic moving to Chelsea benefits both the player and the club but will have to wait till August for his debut for the Blues.
