News from International Football

While we can talk trash about the international break, it's an opportunity for national teams to meet and try things out in preparations for major tournaments. There have been some news from international football that are interesting starting with:

UEFA Nations League

The UEFA Nations League right now is at its conclusion in the league format. Those who top their group in League D to B will be promoted while teams who finished bottom in their group in League A to C will be relegated. In League A, the Netherlands beat France 2-0 relegating Germany to League B and the Netherlands will face Germany in the last Nations League game with a draw enough to go to the semifinals. Portugal advanced to the semifinals after a goalless draw against Italy. England faced Croatia and finally got one over the opponents beating them 2-1 at Wembley with goals from Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane, joining Portugal in the semis. Belgium's hopes of going through crashed losing to Switzerland 5-2, with the Swiss going through with Haris Seferović scoring a hat-trick.

AFCON 2019 Qualifiers

Nigeria are back in the Finals of the Nations Cup after missing out on the past two tournaments. They earned a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday. This puts the Super Eagles top with 10 with South Africa behind with 9 points while Libya have 7 points with Seychelles bottom with one point. Mauritania will be playing in the Nations Cup for the very first time after beating Botswana 2-1. Algeria and Guinea sealed their qualification while Uganda made it back to back qualification after beating Cape Verde 1-0. So far, 9 teams have sealed their place for next year's tournament with only one or two qualifying games left.
