News from International Football

Image
While we can talk trash about the international break, it's an opportunity for national teams to meet and try things out in preparations for major tournaments. There have been some news from international football that are interesting starting with: UEFA Nations League  The UEFA Nations League right now is at its conclusion in the league format. Those who top their group in League D to B will be promoted while teams who finished bottom in their group in League A to C will be relegated. In League A, the Netherlands beat France 2-0 relegating Germany to League B and the Netherlands will face Germany in the last Nations League game with a draw enough to go to the semifinals. Portugal advanced to the semifinals after a goalless draw against Italy. England faced Croatia and finally got one over the opponents beating them 2-1 at Wembley with goals from Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane, joining Portugal in the semis. Belgium's hopes of going through crashed losing to Switzerland 5

Winners & Losers of the Premier League season (so far)

Image
One-third of the Premier League season is already done so far with more twist and turns to come. With what we have seen so far this season, here are the winners and losers of the Premier League. So far. Winners: Manchester City It wouldn't surprise many if Manchester City go on to win the title as they are the team to beat this season. However, some believed that they would drop off this season like we've seen from past defending champions. The defending champions are top of the Premier League with 32 points having improved so much this season thanks to their improved defence with the centre-back pairing of Aymeric Laporte and John Stones,  and the form of Bernardo Silva, who has stepped up in Kevin De Bruyne's absence with injury. The Portuguese had doubled his goal contributions from last season with 3 goals and assists as well as improving in his defensive play making 1.3 tackles per game this season. With no sign of slowing down, Pep's side are showing no

League Action from the Weekend

Image
This past weekend had some scintillating matches where the games brought some great entertainment but also what things could go by the end of the season. Here's the weekend rewind of football action. United outclassed by City Manchester City hosted their city rivals Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday and to say it was a mismatch will be an understatement. City stumped their authority from the get-go and we're rewarded with David Silva opening the scoring. Sergio Agüero doubled City's lead before Anthony Martial got one back from the penalty spot. The third goal by City was a that of fluidity and patience as City made 44 passes before Ilkay Gündogan slotted it home. City's dominance continues, top in the Premier League with 32 points while United are eighth with only 20 points. Liverpool win, Chelsea drop points For the chasing pack, Liverpool managed to get back to winning ways beating Fulham 2-0 at Anfield. The away side caused problems for the Red

This weekend's Match Previews

Image
This weekend is bringing some blockbuster games before the international break with the Manchester Derby in the Premier League, Der Klassiker in the Bundesliga and AC Milan taking on Juventus in the Serie A. Here's the match preview of each of these three games. EPL: The Manchester Derby The Manchester Derby is here again as Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola lock horns again at the Etihad on Sunday. Manchester City are the team to beat this season dropping just four points in their 11 games played in the league and have only been behind for just 12 minutes. City with their potent attack have also been strong at the back conceding just 6.5 shots per game. The least in the division. The City player to highlight would be Raheem Sterling who has become such a fearsome attacker this season making a goal contribution every 70 minutes as well as making 2.7 shots per game and 2.3 key passes per game. So for Manchester United, they would have to try really hard not only keeping City qu

Wednesday's UCL Recap: Matchday 4

Image
The Champions League continued on Wednesday with teams from Groups E to H competing for those knockout places. Here are the four things learned from Wednesday's night. Mourinho: How do you like me now? Despite the negativity with Mourinho this season, United recently have been going results but many saw their chances of getting a result against Juventus at Turin very slim which was evident when Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring. However, United managed to come from behind in the last five minutes to beat the Italian giants 2-1 from Juan Mata and an own goal from Alex Sandro. While it's partly Juve's own making for wasting their chances, it was the perfect shut up response for Mourinho giving United some confidence ahead of the Manchester Derby this coming weekend and their next two UCL games in group H as they're now two points behind Juventus. Madrid got their goal-scoring boots Real Madrid are picking up form under intern coach Santiago Solari as they

Tuesday's UCL Recap: Matchday 4

Image
The UEFA Champions League is approaching the climax period of the group stages where results are needed for teams to advance for the knockout stages or keep their hopes of going through alive. With all the action on Tuesday from Groups A to D, here are the five talking points. Red Star shocker Liverpool had the opportunity to increase their points tally in their group as they traveled to Red Star Belgrade. Despite leaving Xherdan Shaqiri home, it was going to be a good win for the Reds right? Wrong. Red Star pulled one of the shocks in recent Champions League history beating Liverpool 2-0 from a seven minute brace by Milan Pavdov. Liverpool had no answer for Red Star with or without the ball continuing their woes away from home with three straight defeats since last season (excluding neutral grounds). Red Star now have a slim chance of going through while Liverpool must get results at Paris against PSG and at home to Napoli. Never the easy route. PSG need wins not dropped poi

League Action from the weekend

Image
Here are the talking points from what happened from the weekend's football action Emotional Leicester Win Leicester City played their first game after the fatal helicopter crash where five people lost their lives including Leicester City Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. A minute of silence was done before each Premier League match from the weekend. For Leicester City, they went away to face Cardiff City and managed a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from Demarai Grey. The emotions from the goal and before the match itself explained the close relationship between Vichai and the Leicester City squad and a win was dedication to the man responsible for Leicester's miraculous title win. City & Chelsea win, Liverpool drop points The top three in the Premier League remained unbeaten which is the first time since 1978/79 that three teams remain unbeaten from their first 11 games. However, Liverpool were the clear losers as they could only muster a 1-1 draw against Arsenal

A European Super League is bad for the game

Image
From the leaks published by German newspaper Der Speigel on Friday , 16 clubs across Europe have been making plans to create a Super League with plans to break away from their domestic leagues. The 16 teams will consist 11 'founding members' which consist of teams like Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Arsenal including 5 'invited teams' that include Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. A European Super League has been talked about several times over the years but from the leaks, it looks like it is a possibility. Despite the denials made, it's a clear reflection of everything wrong with the game right now and a Super League will change football as we know it in a bad way. What makes football so popular is that anyone has a chance no matter the odds. We saw it when Greece defied the odds to win the European Championship in 2004 and Leicester City's

Leaks shows cover-ups & talks on Super League

German newspaper Der Speigel yesterday uncovered talks between clubs on an European Super League and covers-up by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and UEFA to prevent the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain from receiving hard punishments for violating Financial Fair Play. The documents were obtained by a whistleblower named John, which is not his real name, who runs Football Leaks. The information relating to the story were up to more than 3.4 terabytes and 70 million documents which Der Speigel shared with other media outlets in the European Investigative Collaboration (EIC) consortium. According to the leaks, Bayern Munich alongside Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, Manchester United and 11 others went behind the back of UEFA to discuss forming a European Super League. The competition will involve 11 of the biggest clubs in Europe as 'founders' and five 'initial guests' were there is no relegation and membership will be guaranteed for 20 years. The
