Modric Wins THE BEST Award

Luka Modrić was crowned The Best Men's Player at the FIFA Football Awards last night at London. The Croatian beat former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to win the award becoming the first player who is not Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi since Kaka in 2007 to win a FIFA Award. It has been a fitting 12 months for the midfielder who won the UEFA Champions League in May and led his country Croatia to the FIFA World Cup Final winning the Golden Ball Award for Best Player.

Football's superstars, legends of the game and celebrities were in attendance with the glitz and glamour of the ceremony. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, however, were not in attendance for the ceremony. Mohamed Salah won the FIFA Puskás Award for the best goal beating Ronaldo's overhead kick against Juventus and Gareth Bale's strike against Liverpool in the Champions League Final. Thibaut Courtois won the best goalkeeper award while France's coach Didier Deschamps won the Best Men's Coach award after leading France to the FIFA World Cup title. For the Women's game, Lyon Women's coach Reynald Pedros won the award for Best Women's Coach award while Marta won the Best Women's Player Award.

For the FIFPro XI, both Mohamed Salah and Thibaut Courtois were excluded from the XI as Kylian Mbappe, David de Gea and Eden Hazard were included. Messi, Ronaldo and Modrić were also included as well as Dani Alves, Raphaël Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo and N'golo Kante.

Portugal 🇵🇹   One of the highest-ranked nations in Euro 2024, Portugal has been one that is usually in the conversation as favourites, given their production of elite players. They shocked Europe in 2016, defying the odds to win the tournament, their first major title. Spain 🇪🇸   After impressing in Euro 2020, and making the semifinals, La Roja disappointed in the 2022 World Cup. Only made the Round of 16, losing to Morocco on penalties. Having dominated European and World football during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Spain has struggled to replicate their past success, with the past European Championships their best showing in the last five tournament outings.
