Modric wins UEFA Player of the Year

Luka Modric beat former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as he was awarded the UEFA Player of the Year award for his exploits in the 2017/18 season.  
The awards were held yesterday during the draw for the UEFA Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo was the favorite to win the award given his productive season for Los Blancos scoring 15 goals in the UCL while Mohamed Salah had a fantastic debut season for Liverpool scoring over 40 goals in all competitions last season with 10 in the UCL. Modric was the outsider in winning the award which is a testament of the success and attention the Croatian has given over the past few months.
Modric also led his country Croatia to the World Cup Final in July winning the Golden Ball award for Best Player. For the other awards, Keylor Navas was awarded Best Goalkeeper, Sergio Ramos was awarded Best Defender and Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded Best Forward by UEFA.

Portugal 🇵🇹   One of the highest-ranked nations in Euro 2024, Portugal has been one that is usually in the conversation as favourites, given their production of elite players. They shocked Europe in 2016, defying the odds to win the tournament, their first major title. Spain 🇪🇸   After impressing in Euro 2020, and making the semifinals, La Roja disappointed in the 2022 World Cup. Only made the Round of 16, losing to Morocco on penalties. Having dominated European and World football during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Spain has struggled to replicate their past success, with the past European Championships their best showing in the last five tournament outings. Now under new management in Luis de la Fuente, who has been in the Spanish setup since 2011, de la Fuente hopes to succeed in his first tournament as Spain's coach.
