Champions League Recap (Round of 16)
Porto Shock Juventus
Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 for a second straight season to Portuguese side FC Porto, who went through 4-4 on aggregate on away goals, despite losing 3-2 in Turin. The Bianconeri knew that a 1-0 win or a win by two goals will be enough to go to the quarterfinals. Things did not go to plan from the beginning for Juventus as Porto were awarded a penalty in the 19th minute after a poor challenge from Merih Demiral on Mehdi Taremi in Juventus' penalty box. Sergio Oliveira scored from the spot to give Porto the lead on the night, with a two-goal aggregate lead. The Old Lady bombarded the Porto defence with Juan Cuadrado whipping crosses from the right-hand. Juventus equalized thanks to Federico Chiesa, who scored in the first leg, to get the Italian champions back in the game. Porto would find it difficult to do for the rest of the game when they went down to ten men after Taremi went off for kicking the ball after the whistle had gone. Chiesa would score again from a strong header to give Juventus the lead on the night, plus going level on aggregate. Chances late from Alvaro Morata, whose goal was ruled out as offside and Cuadrado, whose shot hit the woodwork would have seen Juventus go through in 90 minutes. However, the game ended 2-1, 3-3 on aggregate, forcing extra-time. Porto got their second away goal with five minutes remaining from a great free-kick from Oliveira, who struck it under the wall past Wojciech Szczesny, giving Porto the lead 4-3 on aggregate. Adrien Rabiot pulled one back for Juventus but Porto went through to the quarterfinals.
Liverpool go past Leipzig in Budapest
Liverpool's poor domestic form put their second leg clash against Bundesliga side RB Leipzig into question. The game was played in the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary due to coronavirus restrictions in the United Kingdom. Despite their poor form, Liverpool had a two-goal lead on aggregate, putting the initiative on Leipzig to trouble the Liverpool defence. They almost did in the first ten minutes as Alisson was forced a save from a Dani Olmo shot. It was a frantic first half with chances coming from both teams. Liverpool would have felt that they should be going into halftime with a goal with chances from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota but it did not go past Peter Gulacsi in the Leipzig goal. Leipzig had efforts to trouble Liverpool in the second half from Christopher Nkunku and Alexander Sorloth whose chances went over and hitting the post. Liverpool scored with twenty minutes remaining thanks to Mohamed Salah, who finished off a great move from Mane and Jota, who laid the final ball from the Egyptian. Mane scored Liverpool's second to kill off the tie entirely getting his boot on the ball from Divock Origi, to seal Liverpool's place in the quarterfinals.
Haaland terminates Sevilla
Erling Haaland was at it again for Borussia Dortmund, scoring a brace as the Black and Yellow went through to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017. After a 3-2 win in Seville, Dortmund had to close the game out for the Spanish side but Sevilla had a chance early in the game from Suso, whose shot hit the side net. Haaland opened the scoring after a cutback from Marco Reus with the Norwegian firing home to give Dortmund the lead, despite being second-best for much of the first half by Sevilla. Thorgan Hazard had an effort early in the second half which went narrowly wide. Haaland scored early but the goal was disallowed before the referee awarded a penalty for Borussia Dortmund as Jules Kounde fouled Haaland. He missed the penalty as the keeper saved it before saving the rebound. In another turn of events, the penalty was to be taken again as Bono was off his line. Haaland scored the second penalty with his celebration heating up the tension between him and the Sevilla players, ultimately giving a booking. Sevilla was awarded a penalty when Luuk de Jong was fouled by Emre Can, with Youssef En-Nesyri scoring from the spot. En-Nesyri scored deep in added time to give Sevilla some hope but it was not enough as Dortmund went through 5-4 on aggregate.
PSG survive Barca scare
Thanks to their displays at the Camp Nou in the first leg, PSG made it through to the quarterfinals after a 1-1 draw against Barcelona, 5-2 on aggregate. Despite their comfortable lead on aggregate, the French champions endured a lot of pressure from Barcelona in the few minutes of the game with Ousmane Dembele having much of the chances but went begging. All the good work that Barca made were undone when they conceded a penalty as Lenglet fouled Mbappe in the box, the Frenchman scored from the spot, killing the momentum Barcelona had. Messi scored one back with a terrific shot from 30 yards, leaving Keylor Navas helpless. Barcelona was awarded a penalty at the end of halftime but Messi missed his spot-kick to keep it 1-1 on the night. Barcelona kept the pressure on PSG, who will have to thank Keylor Navas, as the Costa Rican made nine saves in the night to prevent the match from becoming another crazy encounter that the Parisians were quite familiar with. It was a poor display from PSG but they advanced, knocking Barcelona out in the Round of 16 for the first time since 2007.
