Football Weekend Recap

Live Football has slowly returned back into our screens with the Bundesliga just three games away from completing the season while La Liga has returned in Spain and the Coppa Italia resumed in Italy to complete the second leg of the semifinals. Here's a recap of football action from the weekend.

Another Bundesliga title incoming for Bayern

Bayern Munich are now one win away from winning the Bundesliga title for the eighth consecutive time after beating Borussia Mönchegladbach 2-1 at the Allianz Arena. Bayern manager Hansi Flick rested Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller with Michael Cuisance and Joshua Zirkzee coming up. Both responded with Zirkzee scoring the first goal of the game. Gladbach would equalize with some help from Bayern with Benjamin Pavard scoring an own goal. It was an even contest with just 14 shots in total with some aggression with 23 fouls. Die Bayern would find a way with Leon Goretzka scoring the winner in the 86th minute which puts the leaders in 73 points with three games remaining. With a game against Werder Bremen in midweek, Bayern know a win will make them champions again.

Werder put five past Padeborn

Werder Bremen look to be picking form at the right time as they know destiny is in their hands to stay in the Bundesliga after a massive victory, beating Padeborn 5-1 on Saturday. Both teams are in the relegation zone but more emphasis was on Bremen as they are closer to safety than Padeborn will look set to go back to 2.Bundesliga. Die Werderaner scored three in the first half with captain David Klaassen scoring a brace while Yuya Osako scoring the other goal. With just six shots from Werder, they made the most from their chances with expected goals putting at 3.13 while Padeborn was at 1.97. Two more goals from Maximilian Eggestein and Niclas Füllkrug completed the rout with Bremen level in points with Düsseldorf and three points behind 15th placed Mainz as the relegation dogfight going down to the wire.

La Liga is back

After a three month load. La Liga finally resumed on the 11th of June with the Seville Derby where Sevilla beating Real Betis 2-0. Valencia dropped points against Levante while Espanyol beat Alavés 2-0 to narrow the gap between them and their relegation rivals. Atlético Madrid returned with a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao, which still highlighted their struggles to convert chances. Barcelona came back with a 4-0 win over Mallorca with Lionel Messi having a hand in three goals while Real Madrid beat Eibar 3-1 at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, where they will play the remainder of their home games this season.

Juventus and Napoli to play in Coppa Italia Final

Football also returned in Italy with the second leg of the semifinals of the Coppa Italia. The first game was Juventus against AC Milan in Turin with the Old Lady leading 1-0 from the first leg. Juventus were awarded a penalty in 13th minute from a handball from Andrea Continue. However, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to convert his penalty hitting the post. Seconds later, Milan went down to ten men after Ante Rebić received a red card for a reckless challenge. The game ended goalless but Juventus won the tie 1-0 on aggregate. They will face Napoli who were also leading 1-0 from the first leg. Christian Eriksen scored for Inter to level on aggregate, scoring directly from a corner. However, Napoli scored to level the score but win 2-1 on aggregate from Dries Mertens, whose goal made him become Napoli's all-time leading goalscorer in the club's history, overtaking former teammate Marek Hamsik.

Taking a knee and remember those who passes on from COVID-19

With La Liga resuming in Spain and football resuming as well in Italy, games in La Liga and the Coppa Italia took a moment of silence for the health care workers and those who have passed away from the coronavirus. Spain and Italy were one of the worst hit nations from the pandemic with players enacting social distancing before the game with no fans in stadia across Europe. Players have also been taking a knee following protest across the world after the death of George Floyd in the United States with Real Madrid full-back the latest to take a knee for racial equality in society and the game as well. Football is not within its own vacuum which we have seen from lockdown and the continued prejudice of particular minorities around the world.
