Football Weekend Recap
Wolves Leave City Stunned
It may be early days in the season so far but Wolves have given City a big blow to the title aspirations this season, winning the game 2-0 at the Etihad on Sunday as City remain eight points behind Liverpool going into the international break after eight games. The away side did well to limit the amount of chances City got in the first half whilst having chances of their own with Patrick Cutrone and Raul Jiménez unable to capitalize whenever Wolves were on the counter attack. The defending champions had the majority of possession but were still unable to break Wolves' defence with their best chance coming from a free kick by David Silva that hit the crossbar. Nuno's approach to the game paid off in the 80th minute when Jiménez went past Otamendi and laid it off for Adama Traore who finished it past Ederson. With City pushing a lot of players to find an equalizer, they were caught out again in the 90th minute, with Jiménez laying it for Traore again to score the second goal, giving Wolves their first win at Manchester City since 1979 and becoming the first team since 2016 to keep a clean sheet at the Etihad. As for City, their games against Liverpool have become more important as keeping their title hopes alive and hope that the Reds will drop points sooner rather than later.
Barça Score Four but See Two Reds
A crazy game at the Camp Nou with missed chances, good goals and controversy as Barcelona beat Sevilla 4-0 to go second in the league table, two points behind leaders Real Madrid. Ernesto Valverde decided to leave Antonie Griezmann on the bench, starting Ousmane Dembélé instead and playing Jean-Clair Todibo for Lenglet whose out due to suspension. Sevilla have the better chances in the first opening minutes with Luuk de Jong having two chances, one saved by ter Stegen and one that he could head the ball well. They did live to regret their chances Sevilla when Luis Suárez opened the scoring with a brilliant overhead kick. Arturo Vidal scored Barça's second before Dembélé scored the third goal with a good composed finish, pretty much sealing the win for Barcelona before halftime. Sevilla continued to get chances by their finishing let them down and lived to pay yet again when Lionel Messi scored from a free kick, his first goal of the season. There was controversy in the last few minutes when Barcelona were down to ten men as Ronald Araújo received a red card for fouling Javier Hernandez from a goalscoring opportunity. This didn't sit well with the Barça players with Dembélé also getting a red card for dissent. A crazy end to the game as Barça ruthlessly punished Sevilla while getting as well by the referee.
Tight At The Top In the Bundesliga
Things are going pretty tight at the top of the Bundesliga with the gap from first to eight being just four points. RB Leipzig dropped points against Bayer Leverkusen which gave an opportunity for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich to capitalize. Both sides were unable to find a win, the Black and Yellow drew to Freiburg 2-2 as Dortmund lost from a winning position with Manuel Akanji scoring an own goal in the 89th minute. Bayern, on the other hand, suffered defeat for the first time this season losing at home to Hoffenheim 2-1. Schalke were also unable to capitalize as they drew 1-1 to FC Köln. The biggest winners from the weekend were Gladbach and Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg took a 1-0 home win against Union Berlin on Sunday while Gladbach went top of the Bundesliga after a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Augsburg with Patrick Herrmann scoring a brace. A weekend where the big boys were unable to take the incentive with other teams now coming into play.
Higuaín ruins Inter's perfect start
Gonzalo Higuaín stepped up from the bench to score the winner as Inter Milan's perfect start to the season came to an end, losing to Juventus 2-1 on Sunday at the San Siro. It was a big test for Inter's credentials in challenging Juventus for the Scudetto this season as both sides are separated by only two points and for Antonio Conte who faced his former employers for the first time since leaving Turin. Alexis Sanchez was suspended and Romelu Lukaku was fit to start while Paulo Dybala started alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. Dybala replayed the faith when he opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a cute finish. Ronaldo had a chance that hit the crossbar as both sides went at it. Inter were awarded a penalty when Matthjis de Ligt handled the ball and Lautaro Martínez scored from the spot, leveling the score.
