5 Things from the Champions League(Matchday 2)
The Serge is Cooking
Serge Gnabry returned to North London but to face Spurs and possibly the beat performance of matchday 2, scoring four goals as Bayern hammered Tottenham 7-2 to continue their fine start to the season on Tuesday. It was the biggest clash in Group B and things started well for Spurs when Son Heung-Min put the hosts in front twelve minutes in but after three minutes, Joshua Kimmich scored a screamer from 25 yards to level. At the stroke of halftime, Robert Lewandowski scored to give Bayern the at the break. Bayern took control in the second half as Gnabry scored twice in two minutes making the score 4-1. Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot after Spurs were awarded a penalty, giving the hosts some hope. It proved nothing more than a consolidation goal as Bayern scored three more goals with Lewandowski scoring one and Gnabry getting two more goals. A pulsating performance from the Bavarians and Gnabry but now more problems and questions for Spurs after a really bad horror show.
Real gets away with it
Casemiro scored an equalizer to salvage a point for Real Madrid as they drew with Belgian side Club Brugge 2-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday. After a bad night in Paris, things didn't go to plan for Los Blancos as they went a goal down with Emmanuel Dennis putting the away side ahead in just nine minutes. Brugge went at Madrid for much of the first half, exploiting Madrid's high line. Dennis scored again six minutes before halftime leaving Madrid much to do in the second half. Areola and Marcelo were brought on for Courtois and Nacho and improved their game, testing Simon Mignolet and Brugge's backline. Sergio Ramos scored to get Madrid back in the game but had to be reviewed by VAR. Things became more tense for Brugge as their captain Ruud Vormer was sent off after a second yellow card. That came in Madrid's favour as Casemiro found the equalizer the hosts needed. Madrid were unable to find the winner as both sides share the points with Club Brugge the happier of the two while Madrid are now without a win in three home games for the first time in their UCL history and are bottom of Group A.
Salzburg are no pushovers
Red Bull Salzburg almost walked away from Anfield with an incredible point but left empty-handed losing to Liverpool 4-3 on Wednesday. The defending champions, who haven't a European tie at Anfield since 2014, got the perfect start when Sadio Mané opened the scoring. Andy Robertson made it 2-0 before Mohamed Salah netted Liverpool's third, putting the Reds in a commanding position. However, Hee-Chan Hwang scored to put Salzburg on the scoreboard before halftime. It was an end-to-end game with the Austrian champions pressurizing Liverpool. Minamino Takumi made it 3-2 and four minutes later, Erling Braut Håland completed the comeback making it 3 all. Mohamed Salah netted Liverpool's fourth as the defending champions get their first win of the UCL season. Salzburg will be encouraged by their performance on the night and could have a role to play in Group E. Whether it is who that tops the group or their chances of going through.
Suárez brace downs Inter
Luis Suárez scored a brace in the Champions League for the first time in three years after Barcelona beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Camp Nou on Wednesday. Ernesto Valverde has been under some pressure after Barça's poor start to the season and was glad that Lionel Messi was back fit to start as he started alongside Suárez and Antonie Griezmann. Inter silenced the Camp Nou as they quickly took the lead from Lauarto Martínez, who lead the front line in Lukaku's absence. Inter through they scored again through Antonio Candreva but was ruled out for offside. In the second half, Luis Suárez scored the equalizer with a fantastic volley and Barça started to take the game to Inter. The introduction of Ousmane Dembélé gave Barcelona more speed and more balance in their attack and found the winner with Suárez scoring the second. An important win for Barça and Valverde as they get 4 points in their two UCL while Inter are yet to win in Group F.
Ajax score three at the Mestalla
It seems like nothing much has changed for Ajax as they top Group H after defeating Valencia 3-0 at the Mestalla on Wednesday. Both teams won their opening Champions League games meaning a win will that either top of their group. Ajax started fast and took the lead after eight minutes from Hakim Ziyech. Valencia had a shout for a penalty turned down but were awarded a penalty minutes later when Gonçalo Guedes was brought down by Edson Àlvarez but Dani Parejo missed his spot kick. That would later back and haunt Valencia when Quincy Promes doubled the lead for the Dutch champions before halftime. The game became more frantic in the second half with Valencia forcing Andre Onana to make some big saves for Ajax. Donny van de Beek scored the third goal for Ajax after a good team move, taking the game from Valencia as last season's semifinalist gave the Spanish side their heaviest home defeat in fifteen years.
