Preview to Premier League Season 19/20 (Part 2)
The Premier League will make it's return on the 9th of August and we continue the preview of the upcoming season with the next seven teams based on their potential final position come May next year.
Burnley. Final Position: 13th
No one expected Burnley to replicate what they did in 2017/18 when they finished 7th and qualified for Europe for the first time in 50 years. Despite getting eliminated very early, they were poor last season and were in the relegation dogfight last season but managed to stay up, finishing 15th. They have brought in Jay Rodgríuez and Erik Pieters and have let go of Tom Heaton and Stephen Ward. Sean Dyche's will trouble teams throughout the season and while they are not catchy on the eye, they are one of the lowest ranked teams in terms of goals and possession, they are effective at what they do, which will give them a mid-table finish this season.
Bournemouth. Final Position: 12th
Bournemouth are the little club from the south coast that achieved their wildest dreams, getting promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2015. Now, they are entering their fifth season in the top flight. The Cherries are an exciting team to watch especially when they are on form as we saw last season with Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and David Brooks, their standout players. They have continued to shop around the Championship for signings, bringing in Lloyd Kelly and Philip Billing from Bristol City and Huddersfield Town as well as Arnaut Danjuma from Belgian side Club Brugge. Even though their defence could put them in trouble, they have enough to finish mid-table again this season.
Southampton. Final Position: 11th
At the start of last season, Southampton looked like a team that was going down from the Premier League but they have a new feeling of optimism under coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. The Swiss coach has re-energized the Saints and are one of the teams to look out for this season. Hasenhüttl's aggressive pressing is pretty to Jürgen Klopp and has served him well when he was at RB Leipzig. Southampton have brought in Danny Ings on a permanent deal from Liverpool and Che Adams from Birmingham City highlighting their need for goals from their forwards with none of their forwards getting 10 goals in the league last season. If Ings and Adams start firing from the off, the Saints look to have a better season this time around.
West Ham United. Final Position: 10th
West Ham United had big ambitions last season bringing Manuel Pellegrini and had a big spending spree signing the likes of Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop, Jack Wilshere, Andriy Yarmolenko and Łukasz Fabiański. The Hammers finished 10th last season and are looking to improve on that this season. The likes of Marko Arnautović and Andy Carroll are gone and they made a big upgrade signing French striker Sébastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt and attacking midfielder Pablo Fornals from Villarreal. Only Arnautović scored up to ten goals last season with Mark Noble and Robert Snodgrass creating the most assists with five each, making these signings quite smart for West Ham. They probably would help the Hammers to have a crack on breaking the top six this season due the teams around them getting slightly better and the likability of West Ham not being able to sustain this for the whole season, they are more likely to finish tenth again this season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers. Final Position: 9th
Wolves had an amazing season coming out from the Championship. They finished 7th, their highest finish in Premier League history with 57 points, one of the highest amount of points amassed by a new promoted team and qualified for Europe. Wolves remain one of the teams likely to break the top 6 as they have kept some of their key players at the Molineux and have added as well, signing Patrick Cutrone from AC Milan, Pedro Neto from Benfica and Jesús Vallejo from Real Madrid on loan. However, Wolves are now a known commodity in the league meaning teams know they will get from them, they struggled against team from the bottom half last season and they now have to balance their league aspirations with European football, a hard balance to work with (ask Burnley) . So Wolves will again finish in the top half but will have a drop-off from last season.
Everton. Final Position: 8th
Under new ownership, it is evident that Everton's plan is to play Champions League football and break into the top six. We have seen it with the managers they have appointed in Ronald Koeman and Marco Silva and their spending they have done in the past few years. However, it has come to little fruition, finishing 8th last season. That hasn't stopped the Toffees from trying as they splashed the cash again this summer. They've signed André Gomes on a permanent deal from Barcelona, Fabian Delph, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and their biggest, Moise Kean from Juventus for £29m. They have lost Ademola Lookman to RB Leipzig and Idrissa Gueye to PSG, leaving a big hole in their midfield. Marco Silva will give many teams, especially the top six, a strong game but with some question marks still in this Everton team, they'll probably finish 8th again with some few improvements.
Leicester City. Final Position: 7th
Brendan Rodgers is approaching his first full season back in the Premier League with Leicester City, and if there's any team to look out for this season in the league, it's the Foxes. They may have finished 9th the previous season but their form since the former Liverpool manager came in showed why many picked them to be the best of the rest this season. They have signed Belgian midfielder Tielemans on a permanent deal from AS Monaco, now boasting a midfield that could rival that of the top six. They have also signed attacker Ayoze Pérez from Newcastle United but have let defender Harry Maguire go to Manchester United for a reported fee of £80m. Depending on how bad any of the top six perform, that could give Leicester the opportunity to take advantage but they themselves have to be really great throughout the season to do that which is very unlikely, so a respectable 7th place finish. Can't break it.
