Football Weekend Recap

VAR deny City win over Tottenham

Video Assistant Referee or VAR as it has been called left its mark very early in the season as it denied a late winner from Gabriel Jesus for Manchester City as the Champions were held to a 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Saturday at the Etihad. City were at their dominant best from the get go with 30 shots, 10 on target compared to Spurs 3 shots with 2 on target. xG even started a similar story with City's expected goals at 3.23 to Spurs' 0.11. Pep's side went in front from Raheem Sterling, who headed the ball from the near post with an excellent cross from Kevin De Bruyne. Spurs exploited an error from Ederson, who was out of position, allowing Érik Lamela to score from Spurs' only shot in the game at that point. City will score again from Kevin De Bruyne supplying another cross, this time for Sergio Agüero. In the second half, Lucas Moura came off the bench to score the equaliser from a corner forcing Guardiola to remove Agüero for Gabriel Jesus which was caused an open conflict at the City touchline. City pushed hard to find a winner and it felt like they did when Jesus scored in the 91st minute but VAR found a handball from Aymeric Laporte in the build-up to the goal, which made referee Michael Oliver to not reward the goal angering the Etihad. City were unable to find a winner as Spurs gained a very fortunate draw at the Champions. Deja Vu from the Champions League second leg in April.

La Liga open with Barça defeat

Barcelona began defending their league title with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Friday at the San Mamés. Frenkie de Jong and Antonie Griezmann were given their debuts for the club but were without Lionel Messi who was ruled out due to injury. Barcelona had the the majority of the possession but did very little with it, producing just two shots from 11 on target while Bilbao had the same number of shots from had five on target. Barça's day got difficult when Luis Suárez was subbed off after sustaining a muscle injury, forcing Ernesto Valverde to bring on Rafinha. Moussa Dembélé and Griezmann both were quiet and despite Ivan Rakitić's introduction in the second half, Barcelona stilled laboured to create chances. Bilbao did well with the little they HD with the ball. Iñaki Williams troubled Barcelona and had two chances to score but was denied by ter Stegen. Bilbao were rewarded for their efforts when substitute Aritz Aduriz scored a stunning overhead kick in the 89th minute giving Barcelona an opening day defeat.

A minute later, he scored a stunning overhead kick to win the game for Bilbao. At 38 years old, not too shabby.
