Tuesday's UCL Recap: Round of 16 (Second Leg)
It's the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 with some games looking like it was over from the first leg or the hope that the game can turn on its head in the second leg as we have seen a number of times in the competition's history. Here is the recap of Tuesday's Champions League games.
Ajax takeover the Bernabéu
It was a week for Real Madrid to completely forget with three defeats at home in three competitions losing the Copa Del Rey semifinal against Barcelona, losing to them again in La Liga which completely ended their slim title hopes and are out of the Champions League after a 4-1 defeat to Ajax ending 5-3 on aggregate to the Dutch side as they play in the quarterfinals for the first time in over twenty years. Playing to the same routine from the first leg, Ajax were more efficient with their chances and we're clinical with Hakim Ziyech and David Neres scoring in the first half to give Ajax the lead on aggregate. Madrid were unable to control things particularly in midfield with Frenkie de Jong controlling things and Dušan Tadić easing past people for fun and was influential in the game, creating the two goals in the first half and scored the third goal giving Ajax some breathing space despite speculation that the ball went past the line in the buildup and was reviewed by VAR for about three minutes but it was given. Marco Asensio gave Madrid hope scoring in the 70th minute but was nothing more than a consolidation goal with just two minutes later, Lasse Schöne scored a fantastic free-kick fooling Thibaut Courtois and effectively killed all hope for Madrid. The frustration of the Madrid player showed when Nacho was sent off for stomping Van de Beek which was the end of a miserable night for Madrid as it is the end of an era for Los Blancos having won the Champions League in four of the past five years and will not be in the semifinals since 2010. Lots of soul searching .
Kane gets it done for Spurs
Harry Kane scored the all-important away goal for Tottenham Hotspur as they are through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League for the first time since 2011 after beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at the Westfalenstadion, winning 4-0 on aggregate. Dortmund unsurprisingly went out with Marco Reus, Mario Götze, Jadon Sancho and Paco Alcácer all starting with the task of overturning a 3-0 deficit from the first leg and created their chances to score but Spurs still kept them at bay thanks to some important tackles by Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris making some important saves. Three minutes into the second half, Spurs sealed the tie with Harry Kane clean through on goal and slotting the ball past Roman Bürki as Dortmund needed to score five to go through. It didn't happen as Spurs pulled off a very professional performance away from home as they go through while Dortmund are now eliminated from the Champions League at this stage in two of the past three season with their last quarterfinal appearance back in 2014.
