League Action from the Weekend

The Bundesliga is still on break and there was no Serie A action with the Coppa Italia this weekend leaving just action from the Premier League and La Liga. Here are the highlights from the weekend.

David Saves United

Manchester United got their first win against teams in the top 6 in Tottenham, beating the Lilywhites 1-0 at Wembley on Sunday. An end-to-end game, United got their moment when Paul Pogba laid a ball for Marcus Rashford, which the Manchester native converted just before halftime. Spurs responded in the second half but David de Gea was the guy that sealed the points for United making 11 saves to keep United's winning streak going under Ole Gunnar Solskjær to 5 in the league and takes them six points behind 4th placed Chelsea, level on points with Arsenal who are 5th while Spurs lose ground on Liverpool and Manchester City.

Liverpool bounce back

Liverpool returned to winning ways following their defeats against Manchester City in the league and Wolves in the FA Cup with a 1-0 win against Brighton and Howe Albion at the Amex on Saturday. It was a professional performance from the league leaders with Fabinho placed at centre-back with injuries to Lovren, Matip and Joe Gomez. The Reds were able to nullify Brighton as they didn't have a shot on target during the game and were awarded a penalty early in the second half which Mohamed Salah converted from the spot. It now leaves Liverpool seven points clear off Manchester City who play on Monday against Wolves at the Etihad.

Burnley win with no shots on target

Burnley got a very important win to distant themselves away from the bottom three beating fellow relegation candidates Fulham 2-1 at Turf Moor. Things didn't start well for the Clarets as Fulham opened the scoring in just two minutes from a great strike from André Schürrle. Burnley had 11 shots in the game but none of their shots were on target compared to Fulham's 4 from 12 shots. However, Burnley managed to have the luck of the Irish on their side scoring twice in three minutes from two own goals from Fulham players Joe Bryan and Denis Odoi. Fulham were unable to find an equalizer as Fulham remain in the bottom three while Burnley jump up to 15th.

400 La Liga goals for Messi

Lionel Messi sealed another milestone in his already successful career scoring 400th La Liga goal as Barcelona beat Eibar 3-0 at the Camp Nou. The Catalans went in front 20 minutes in the first half from Luis Suárez scoring his 13th league goal this season. Eibar had little to threaten the defending champions as they were put to the sword in the second with Lionel Messi scoring his milestone goal and Suárez adding a second to seal all three points and still leaves them five points clear off Atlético Madrid

Ceballos seals late Madrid win

Dani Ceballos scored the winner against his former club as Real Madrid left it very late beating Real Betis 2-1 away at the Benito Villamarín. Madrid opened the scoring early with Luka Modrić scoring his first goal in a year from a fierce shot. It was an odd game for Los Blancos having just 26% possession. In the second half, Betis leveled the score from Sergio Canales after a review from VAR. Facing dropped points again, Madrid were awarded a free kick in the 88th minute as Dani Ceballos brilliantly slotting it in to save Solari some slack from the Madrid faithful.

Williams downs Sevilla

Iñaki Williams scored his first goal at the San Mamés Stadium in almost two years as Athletic Bilbao damaged Sevilla's title hopes with a 2-0 win. It was an even tie for the first twenty minutes until Williams opened the scoring from a good counterattack. Sevilla were unable to respond despite having more shots on target and more possession. Williams sealed the win late in the second half to give Bilbao a big win in their chances of survival this season in La Liga while Sevilla lose ground on Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, level on points with Real Madrid.

Player of the Weekend: David de Gea

Manchester United look rejuvenated under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and it looks like their keeper David de Gea is now back to his very best. The Spaniard was immense for the Red Devils keeping them in the game till the very game. De Gea made an astonishing 11 saves against Spurs which is the second highest amount of saves he has made in a EPL game with his highest 13 saves against Arsenal last season. United are scoring again but Dave is still ever reliable between the sticks.
