Football Action from the Weekend

The football continues to go on but there weren't much league from the weekend with Serie A and the Bundesliga still having their winter break and the FA Cup was in action in England with just La Liga on show. Despite that, here are the highlights from the weekend of football.

Major teams advance in the FA Cup

Premier League sides started their FA Cup campaign this past weekend and all teams, excluding Liverpool who play tonight against Wolves, have advanced into the 4th Round of the Cup. Manchester City and Tottenham both won their games with a seven goal margin, Chelsea beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, Arsenal got past Blackpool 3-0 and Manchester United beat Championship side Reading 2-0. The top 6 sides will be looking to add more silverware this season with the FA Cup but will it be a priority or not?

Barça go five points clear

Barcelona stated 2019 going five points clear at the top of the table in La Liga after beating Getafe 2-1 on Sunday. It was a game that showed the class of Barcelona winning the day despite the fierce efforts from Garage. Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a nutmeg on the goalkeeper before scoring past the empty net. Luis Suárez scored his 12th La Liga goal this season with a fantastic volley doubling Barça's lead. Despite Getafe getting a goal back from Jaime Mata, Barcelona held on to get three points and extend their lead at the top.

FA Cup Upsets

The FA Cup will be nothing without a few upsets and there were some big ones from the weekend. Southampton were forced to have a replay after their 2-2 draw against Derby County. Newcastle United will also a replay against Blackburn Rovers with the game ending 1-1. Fulham were knocked out of the competition losing to League 2 side Oldham Athletic 2-1 at Craven Cottage but the biggest one was League 2 side Newport County beating Leicester City 2-1 to advance from a penalty scored by Pádraig Amond. The Magic of the Cup.

Madrid slump at home

Real Madrid returned to the Bernabéu after their exploits at the Cup World Cup but didn't put an exciting performance losing to Real Sociedad 2-0. Playing their strongest XI with Gareth Bale injured, one would have thought the experience of Madrid would come after going a goal down in just three minutes from a penalty scored by Willian José but no. It didn't. It was an uninspiring show from Los Blancos with only Vinicius Junior putting up a good show. Madrid were down to ten men after Lucas Vásquez was sent off and Rubén Pardo seal Madrid's bad day scoring Sociedad's second. A big win for Real Sociedad as they go six points away from the bottom three while Solari's men are ten points behind Barcelona.

Sharing the spoils in Seville

Barcelona looked to be the winners in a game they didn't play following Atletico Madrid's game against Sevilla ending in a 1-1 draw on Sunday at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. It was a game between 2nd and 3rd in the table both sides needing a win to put the pressure on Barcelona. Sevilla drew first blood from Wissam Ben Yedder capitalizing on the commotion in the Atleti penalty box. Antonie Griezmann leveled the scoring from a free kick which is his 8th league goal this season. It was a game that brought chances with both Jan Oblak and Tomáš Vaclík being called out. The draw does little for both teams with Barcelona now extending their lead.
