Wednesday's UCL Recap: Matchday 6

Wednesday brought the complete end of the Champions League group stages. Groups E to H played their last group games with many knowing who are going through. Here are the highlights from Wednesday's night.

Lyon make it through

The only game that was a winner takes all scenario was Lyon facing Shakhtar Donetsk at the NSC Olimpiyskiy. Lyon knowing a draw was enough for them to go through went behind with Júnior Moraes opening the scoring giving the Ukrainians the edge. With 17 shots, the Ligue 1 side needed to find an equalizer which they got from captain Nabil Fekir in the 65 minute.  Finishing with 8 points while Shakhtar finished with 6 points, Lyon go through in Group F with Manchester City who topped the group after beating Hoffenheim 2-1 at the Etihad.

CSKA Moscow shock Real

Real Madrid experienced a shock 3-0 defeat at the hands of CSKA Moscow at the Santiago Bernabéu. Madrid rested many of their senior players as they are already through with only Marcelo, Isco, Asensio and Benzema the only first team players starting. Madrid dominated in both possession and shots but were wasteful and paid the price with CSKA Moscow scoring twice before half-time. Amor Sigurdsson scored in the 73rd minute to complete a historic win for the Russian side as they inflicted Madrid's worst ever UCL defeat at home. It didn't affect Real's placing in Group G as they topped the group with AS Roma losing 2-1.

Goal frenzy at Amsterdam

Ajax Amsterdan host German giants Bayern Munich at the Amsterdam Arena. Both teams knew they were through so it was a battle of who tops Group E. Both teams went at it with 17 shots on target making both goalkeepers to be very busy. Dusan Tadić and Robert Lewandowski scored a brace each while Thomas Müller and Max Wöber received their marching orders. With Kingsley Coming scoring Bayern's third, it looked like they edged out the Dutch side but Nicolás Tagliafico equalized to get Ajax a point. Bayern top the group with 14 points while Ajax finish second with 12 points.

Young Boys beat The Old Lady

BSC Young Boys ended their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory against Italian champions Juventus at the Stade de Suisse. Juventus, already through, still fielded a strong side with Cristiano Ronaldo, Douglas Costa, Miralem Pjanić and Leonardo Bonucci starting. Young Boys got a penalty that was 50/50 with Guillaume Hoarau scoring. Hoarau scored again in the second half as Juventus were caught off guard on the counter attack. Paulo Dybala scored one back but Juventus were unable to escape defeat. Juventus topped Group H with Manchester United through as well despite losing 2-1 against Valencia.
