Football Weekend Recap
Premier League Action
Forty-one goals were scored in the matchday 4 of the Premier League, with another string of weird results. The biggest result was Aston Villa 's incredible 7-2 win against Liverpool on Sunday at Villa Park. Ollie Watkins bagged a first Premier League hat-trick with Jack Grealish, and John McGinn scoring as well. This is Liverpool's worst league defeat in over fifty years, as the Reds were second best in everything they did on Sunday. Another big result was Manchester United losing 6-1 at Old Trafford to Tottenham on Sunday. Son Heung-Min, and Harry Kane scored a brace each as Spurs got their biggest result against Manchester United in the Premier League era while Jose Mourinho got his first win against United since departing the club in December 2018. United played much of the game with ten players as Anthony Martial received a red card for a punch on Erik Lamela. Everton are they only team with a perfect record so far, as they beat Brighton 4-2 with James Rodriguez scoring a brace. Chelsea scored four past Crystal Palace on Saturday, the tactical clash between Pep Guardiola, and Marcelo Bielsa ended in a stalemate as Leeds United got a point against Manchester City at Elland Road. Arsenal win their game 2-1 against Sheffield United, West Ham got their first away win of the season against Leicester City, West Brom's woes continue with a 2-0 defeat to Southampton, Newcastle scored three past Burnley while Wolves beat Fulham 1-0.
La Liga Action
Unlike the Premier League, it wasn't goals galore in the Spanish La Liga, with only 17 goals scored in matchday 5. The biggest game of the weekend was Barcelona taking on Sevilla. The game ended 1-1 with both goals scored in the first ten minutes of the game. Another highlight was the debut of American international Sergiño Dest, who moved to Barcelona from Ajax this summer. Vinicius Júnior and Karim Benzema were among the goals for Real Madrid, as the defending champions beat Levante 2-0. Atlético Madrid played against Villarreal at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday but the game ended in goalless draw. Despite scoring six last week, Atléti were toothless up front and could have conceded two goals from Villarreal but Jan Oblak saves their blemishes. Despite getting a red card, Eibar got their first win of the season, defeating Real Valladolid 2-1 with Kévin Rodriguez scoring the winner in the 90th minute. Real Betis have won three of their five games so far in La Liga, winning 2-0 against Valencia with former Barcelona winger Cristan Tello scoring. Real Sociedad beat Getafe 3-0 while Athletic Bilbao lost to Alavés 1-0 despite Bilbao having the man advantage. Osasuna beat Celta Vigorously 2-0, Cádiz and Granada shared the points while Huesca continue to search for their first win after drawing goalless to Elche.
Bundesliga action
Matchday 3 of the Bundesliga brought twenty-nine goals from nine games. The biggest game was Bayern's clash against Hertha Berlin. The game was a pulsating affair as Bayern just edged Hertha, winning 4-3 with Hertha equalizing three times during the match. Robert Lewandowski was the man for Bayern Munich, scoring all of Bayern's goals including the winning goal which was a penalty, very late into stoppage time. Borussia Dortmund swept Freiburg aside, winning the game 4-0 on Saturday. Despite not having Jadon Sancho, American starlet Gio Reyna stepped up and had a great game, creating three assists for his teammates. Union Berlin won their first game of the season in some style, crushing Mainz 4-0 on Friday. Despite appointing Manuel Baum as their new manager, there was no new manager bounce for Schalke, as they lost 4-0 to Leipzig. Meaning they have already conceded fifteen goals from three games played. Alassane Pléa scored his first goal of the Bundesliga season as Gladbach beat FC Köln 3-1. Bayer Leverkusen dropped points against Stuttgart, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Hoffenheim 2-1, Werder Bremen beat Arminia 1-0 while Wolfsburg played a goalless draw against Augsburg.
Serie A Action
Eight games were played in Serie A this past weekend with twenty-four goals scored. The biggest game was between Lazio and Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday. The game ended 1-1 with Sergej Milinković-Savić scoring for Lazio while Lautaro Martínez scored for Inter. However, both teams had a man sent off with Ciro Immobile and Stefan Sensi receiving their marching orders. Atalanta have scored thirteen goals already from three games this season as the Bergamo club scored five past Cagliari with Luis Muriel, Duván Zapata and Papi Gómez scoring. Portuguese forward Rafael Leão scored twice in AC Milan's 3-0 win against Spezia, with left-back Theo Hernández scoring as well. Former Barcelona winger Pedro scored on his debut for Roma as the Roman side beat Udinese 1-0. Francesco Caputo scored a brace in Sassuolo's 4-1 win against Crotone, taking his goal tally to three in three games. Fiorentina lost their game against Sampdoria 2-1, Parma beat Hellas Verona 1-0 while Benevento made it two wins in two games after beating Bologna 1-0.
Player of the Weekend: Jack Grealish
Aston Villa shocked everyone this past weekend not only beating the Premier League champions Liverpool, but scoring SEVEN goals past them on Sunday. Much of that was down to their captain Jack Grealish. The England international scored twice and assisted three goals as he tormented Liverpool's back four alongside Ollie Watkins, who bagged a hat-trick. He made 50 touches, 3 shots (2 on target) and 5 key passes. Incredible performance from Grealish and Villa.
