Premier League Action
Twenty-nine goals were scored this past weekend with two matches left, with penalties galore as seven penalties were awarded this past weekend. The highlight match of the weekend was Manchester City 5-2 home defeat to Leicester City. Jamie Vardy netted a hat-trick, with two goals from the penalty spot while James Maddison netted an absolute peach of a goal as Pep Guardiola has to sort out City's defensive woes this season as this is the first time in his managerial career that he has conceded five goals in a home game. For Brendan Rodgers' side, this was their first win away from home since January, and Vardy already has five goals this season, tied with Everton's Dominic Calvert-Levin. Bruno Fernandes scored a 100th minute penalty to give Manchester United their first win of the season in a quite fortunate 3-2 win against Brighton which was engulfed in some controversy, particularly with the late penalty that was given to United. Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Tammy Abraham scored for Chelsea as the Blues came from three goals down to salvage a 3-3 draw against West Brom at the Hawthorns. Everton continued their perfect start to the season with a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace while Danny Ings saved the day for Southampton as the Saints got their first win of the season, beating Burnley 1-0. Patrick Bamford continued his hot form in front of goal, as he scored an 88th minute winner in Leeds United's 1-0 win against Sheffield United. Callum Wilson scored a late penalty as Newcastle United gained a 1-1 draw against Tottenham, much to the disappointment of Spurs manager Jose Mourinho. West Ham were without their manager David Moyes at the dugout as he was quarantined after testing positive for COVID-19 but the Hammers did not let that affect them as they got their first win, beating Wolves 4-0 with Jarrod Bowen scoring a brace. Fulham will be hosting Aston Villa while Liverpool face Arsenal on Monday night.
La Liga action
Thirty-four goals were scored as Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Sevilla playing their first league games of the season. Real Madrid got their first win of the season with a 3-2 win against Real Betis on Saturday. The defending champions battled it out with Betis but the deciding moment of the game came in the 81st minute with Betis defender Marc Bartra handling the ball in his penalty box, with the referee awarding the penalty to Madrid which Sergio Ramos netted. Atletico Madrid started their La Liga season with a bang, beating Granada 6-1 on Sunday. Diego Simeone's team dispatched their opponents with Luis Suarez making his debut for Los Rojiblancos, coming off the bench to net a brace. They have already scored 3 or more goals this season as they only did that twice last season. Ivan Rakitic scored on his La Liga debut for Sevilla as the Europa League champions beat Cadiz 3-1. Two late goals in injury time from Rakitic and Munir El Haddadi was enough to give Sevilla the win as the Andalusian side were still level with Cadiz at 1-1 in the 90th minute. Barcelona started their season under Ronald Koeman with a 4-0 win against Villarreal. Ansu Fati was the star of the show as the young forward netted a brace. Lionel Messi netted his first goal of the season as well with Pau Torres netting an own goal. Bundesliga action
Three games in the Bundesliga this past weekend ended in draws with twenty-seven goals scored. The biggest result from the weekend was Hoffenheim's 4-1 win against Bayern Munich on Sunday. The defending champions were shocked as Andrej Kramaric scoring a brace as Hoffenheim inflicted Bayern's first defeat in all competitions since the 2-1 defeat to Gladbach in December last year, winning their last 23 games in all competitions, 14 in the Bundesliga. Felix Uduokhai and Daniel Caligiuri scored in Augsburg's 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund. The Black and Yellow dominated the game with 80% possession plus having 18 shots but to no prevail as they suffered their first defeat of the season. Emil Forsberg plus Kerem Demirbay scored as Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig shared the spoils, finishing 1-1. Borussia Monchengladbach dropped two points in their 1-1 draw against Union Berlin as defender Nico Schlotterbeck scored an equalizer for the side from Berlin. Arminia Bielefeld got their first win this season, beating FC Koln 1-0 while Stuttgart beat Mainz 4-1 albeit both sides got a red card. Wolfsburg and Freiburg played 1-1 while Schalke lost to Werder Bremen 3-1 which turned out to be David Wagner's last game in charge of Schalke as he was relieved of his duties.
Serie A Action
Thirty-eight goals were scored in the Serie A this past weekend with only one game where the scored was not two goals or more. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace in Juventus' 2-2 draw away against AS Roma on Sunday with Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout scoring a brace as well. Inter Milan played their first Serie A game on Saturday against Fiorentina at the San Siro, and it was a pulsating affair but Inter won the game 4-3 with Danilo D'Ambrosio scoring the winner for the Nerazzurri in the 89th minute. Hirving Lozano scored twice in Napoli's 6-0 win against Genoa while Atalanta continues to score goals for fun as they swept aside Torino 4-2 with Papu Gomez, Luis Muriel, and Marten de Roon scoring for the Bergamo side. Gaetano Letizia scored the winning goal for Benevento as the newly-promoted side got their first win against Sampdoria 3-2. Ciro Immobile scored in Lazio's 2-0 win against Cagliari while Udinese lost 1-0 to Hellas Verona. Domenico Berardi and Francesco Caputo scored in Sassuolo's 4-1 win against Spezia while Brahim Diaz scored on his Serie A debut for AC Milan as the Rossoneri beat Crotone 2-0.
Player of the Weekend - Jamie Vardy
The Leicester City striker continues to be a thorn for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City as the England striker netted his second hat-trick against City in Leicester City's 5-2 win against City at the Etihad on Sunday. Two of the goals were from the penalty spot as he was fouled by Benjamin Mendy in Leicester's three penalties. The other was a deaf finish from close range beating Ederson in the process. Astonishingly, Vardy only made 21 touches, the least amount of any outfield player from both teams. Nevertheless, he continues to score goals for Leicester as he has scored five goals already from three games played.
