Football Weekend Recap

Premier League Returns

The Premier League returned in midweek as some teams returned after three months of inactivity. On Friday, Norwich's drop to the Championship looks inevitable after a 3-0 defeat to Southampton while Tottenham could only muster a point against Manchester United as Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes played together for the first time. Both Watford and Brighton were able to gain points in their hopes of survival on Saturday with Watford gaining a point against Leicester City while Brighton beat Arsenal 2-1 with Neal Maupay scoring after a controversial challenge on Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno in the first half. West Ham and Bournemouth are in the other hand, lost  their games to Wolves and Crystal Palace respectively, as their poor form continues after the break. Chelsea looks to be consolidating their place in the top four after a 2-1 win away at Aston Villa while is bad news for Villa as they remain 19th and need to do better in holding on to a lead. The Merseyside derby ended goalless for the third consecutive game at Goodison Park as Liverpool need five points now to win the Premier League, depending on City's next two games.

Madrid go top after Barça drop points

Real Madrid go top of La Liga after beating Real Sociedad 2-1 on Sunday at the Reale Arena. Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos scored for Los Blancos as they returned to the top of La Liga since beating Barcelona in El Clasico. Karim Benzema continues to lead the way for Madrid, scoring more goals than any other player in La Liga since the resumption with three, taking his goal tally in the league with 17. However, Benzema's goal was a source of controversy on whether he handled the ball before he scored. Barcelona, on the other hand, paid the price after a goalless draw against Sevilla on Friday. It was a game that the Catalans struggled, something that is happening regularly this season. Frenkie de Jong missed the game and Luis Suárez looks laboured following his return. Barça better hope that Madrid drop points but they need to get points themselves.

Serie A Returns

Serie A made its return since March on Saturday with Torino and Parma the first game back. The game ended 1-1 while Verona beat Cagliari 2-1 which takes them up to 7th. Atalanta continued their goal scoring after beating Sassuolo 4-1 Duván Zapata scoring a brace. Inter Milan cut the gap from Juventus to six points beating Sampdoria 2-1 with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez. With persisting protests over racial equality, Lukaku took a knee and raised his fist in solidarity. The return continues with Juventus playing Bologna on Monday night after their Coppa Italia final defeat.

Penultimate games in the Bundesliga

The 2019/2020 Bundesliga season is reaching its conclusion, with all nine league games played on Saturday. Bayern Munich made it 12 consecutive wins after beating Freiburg 3-1 at the Allianz Arena. Robert Lewandowski scored a brace making 33 league goals, breaking the record of scoring the most Bundesliga goals by a non-German player, which was held by Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang. Borussia Dortmund beat RB Leipzig 2-0 to finish second and qualified for the Champions League next season. Gladbach beat Paderborn 3-1 while Leverkusen's top four hopes took a big hit, losing to Hertha Berlin 2-0. Mainz will play in the Bundesliga next season after beating Werder Bremen 3-1, meaning either Bremen or Fortuna Düsseldorf will play in the promotion/relegation playoff which is 16th place.

Player of the Weekend - Robert Lewandowski

It has been an absolutely fantastic season for Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker has scored 33 Bundesliga goals this season, the most from a non-German player. He was at it again against Freiburg. According to whoscored, he scored twice from just three shots and made seven key passes in the game, plus creating an assist for Joshua Kimmich. A fantastic season from a fantastic striker.
