Winners & Losers from the Summer Transfer Window

The Summer Transfer Window has ended for all across Europe yesterday evening with the deadline day and there will be no transfer activity till January next year. The summer transfer window has seen some major deals done particularly in La Liga and Serie A but who were the biggest winners and losers from this transfer window?

Winners

  • Atlético Madrid

Losing the likes of Antonie Griezmann, Rodri, Diego Godín, Juanfran and Filipe Luís, who were instrumental to Atléti's success under Diego Simeone, one could think that Atlético Madrid will struggle but they took action. They have spent €250m on the likes of Kieran Trippier, Marcos Llorente, Felipe, Lodi and Héctor Herrera. Their biggest acquisition is Portuguese wonderkid João Félix for a staggering €126m for Benfica. A lot of responsibility in on the 19 year old's shoulder but with what we have seen so far, he looks at home under Simeone and is the face of the 'new' Atlético Madrid.

  • Juventus

The Italian giants has been successful in getting good value on players who were approaching the twilight of their careers. Now, they are splashing the cash on the biggest talent around to match their European rivals. They have signed midfielders Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey on free transfers, left-back Luca Pellegrini and right-back Danilo. The cherry on top of the cake is beating the likes of Barcelona to sign young centre-back Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax for €85.5m as the Old Lady not only see him to contribute now but also lead Juventus backline with Chiellini and Bonucci ageing.

  • Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund put up a good title challenge last season and look to continue where they left off. They have used Bayern's playbook of taking talent of their rivals, bringing in Thorgan Hazard from Gladbach and Julian Brandt from Leverkusen, increasing their options in the final third, which already have the likes of Jadon Sancho and Marco Reusable, as well as signing Paco Alcácer from Barcelona on a permanent deal. They have signed left-back Nico Schulz from Hoffenheim and centre-back Matts Hummels from Bayern Munich to improve their defence. BVB have spent well this summer window as they set out to win the Bundesliga this season.

  • Manchester City

Manchester City won a domestic treble last season becoming the first team to do so. Despite their success, Pep Guardiola showed no signs of slowing down. They made only three signings but were key in improving the competition and depth in the squad. They signed back Angeliño from PSV Eindhoven who will give Benjamin Mendy competition at left-back and Portuguese right-back João Cancelo from Juventus for €65m with Danilo going the other way for €37m. With Fernandinho not getting any younger, they signed midfielder Rodri from Atlético Madrid for a club record fee of €70m, looking to be Pep's go-to guy in defensive midfield. Still stacked with a wealth of talent, City have only gotten stronger.

  • Inter Milan

Inter Milan made a big coup bringing in former Juventus coach Antonio Conte and it looks like they have supported him in the transfer window. Firstly, they have finally gotten rid of Argentine forward Mauro Icardi, whose relationship with the club deteriorated with Romelu Lukaku coming in to the club. They have also brought in Nicolò Barella and Alexis Sanchez on loan as well as bringing some experience in former Atlético defender Diego Godín. It may be a big ask for the Nerazzurri to topple Juventus but their signings bring a lot of encouragement and have finally gotten rid of their bad apples in Icardi and Nainggolan.

Losers

  • Neymar

The biggest transfer saga this summer was about Brazilian star Neymar. The player and his agent have openly voiced their discontent and their desire to leave Paris Saint-Germain. Two years after his world record move to Paris from Barcelona. Barcelona were constantly linked with bringing him back and Neymar himself, was opened to a return back at the Camp Nou. Unfortunately for him, PSG and Barcelona were unable to cut a deal with the best deal Barcelona could make was €120m plus Dembélé, Rakitić or Nelson Semedo. Now he would have to face the music in Paris and try to salvage his career.

  • Chelsea

From their four games this season as well as the UEFA Super Cup, Chelsea could have used this transfer window to sort out parts of their squad that needed improvement. From getting an upgrade at right-back to challenge César Azpilicueta to centre-back with Antonio Rüdiger their most senior defender whose currently injured. A lot will be on Lampard's hands to make this Chelsea side competitive after the sale of Eden Hazard and being hit with a transfer ban, they will be relying on their young players to minimize impact. Whether it will pay off is anybody's guess.

  • Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have spent some money over the summer. They signed French defenders Benjamin Pavard from Stuttgart and Lucas Hernandez from Atlético Madrid but it still feels like a lost opportunity for the Bavarians to lay down a marker across Europe. Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry have left the club after a decade and we're unable to sign anyone of their major targets like Leroy Sané and were forced to bring in Ivan Perisić and Philippe Coutinho on loan. It may be enough to win the Bundesliga but with their ambitions in the Champions League, it's quite underwhelming.

  • Zinedine Zidane

How can Zidane be a loser from this transfer window? Yes, Zidane was able to bring some players in the Bernabéu from Eden Hazard, Luka Jović, Ferland Mendy, etc. However, he still loses as he was unable to rid of some of the players who were not part of his plans like James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale. The Frenchman voiced his desire that for Gareth Bale to leave the Bernabéu but it was Zidane that blinked first as he has now brought Bale back into the setup. With Marco Asensio injured for the season, it has forced Zidane to make some changes.

  • Eintracht Frankfurt

Last season, Eintracht Frankfurt had one of the most exciting attacks in the Bundesliga with Sébastien Haller, Luka Jović and Ante Rebić. Now all three of them are gone. Jović moved to Real Madrid, Holler went to West Ham and Rebić signed for AC Milan on a season long loan deal. It did bring Frankfurt a lofty sum with over €100m from the three of them but it's what they spent it on to replace them. Frankfurt have brought in Bas Dost from Sporting, young Serbian forward Deja Joveljić from Red Star Belgrade and André Silva on loan from Milan. Haller, Jović and Rebić contributed 41 goals between them which is close to 70 percent of Frankfurt's goals last season and it will be a tall ask for Dost, Joveljić and Silva to replicate what the front three did last season.
