Football Weekend Recap
Five Star Leicester
Leicester City showed their credentials of breaking into the top six this season after a great performance against Newcastle United at the King Power Stadium in Sunday where the Foxes won 5-0. Leicester were without James Maddison who was out due to injury. Ricardo Pereira opened the scoring for the hosts in the 16th minute then two minutes before halftime, Newcastle were down to ten men after Isaac Hayden received a red card for a rash challenge on Dennis Praet. Things went from bad to worse in the second half for the Magpies. Jamie Vardy scored twice in the second half with Paul Dummett scoring an own goal as well. Late in the 90th minute, Wilfred Ndidi put the icing on the cake scoring the fifth goal giving Leicester a resounding win as they go third on the table, with a trip to Anfield next week.
No goals in Madrid Derby
Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid shared the points on Saturday after a goalless draw at the Wanda Metropolitano. The derby was quite significant for both teams as they wanted to lay down a marker this season in La Liga with both unable to make a quick start with some uninspiring performances. Very few chances came in the game with only shots going on target with Madrid having the better chances with Jan Oblak making some important saves. Both João Felix and Eden Hazard were disappointing in their performances as they were the players many looked at to bring the X-factor for their teams particularly Hazard who still looks unsettled in Madrid and was subbed off for James Rodriguez. An underwhelming Madrid derby that keeps Madrid top of the La Liga table with 15 points while Atléti are at their heels with 14 points.
Schalke inflict defeat on Leipzig
Schalke 04 gave RB Leipzig their first defeat of the season beating them 3-1 at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Die Knappen opened the scoring from Salif Sané, who scored his second goal of the season. Two minutes before halftime, Schalke were awarded a penalty, which was converted by Amine Harit, making Leipzig's task in the second half quite difficult. Rabbi Matondo scored the third goal in the 58th minute proving there was no way back for Leipzig. Emil Forsberg scored for Leipzig but was nothing more than a consolidation goal as Leipzig suffered defeat for the first time this season as they are second, one point behind Bayern Munich. Schalke have had a good start under new manager David Wagner, sitting 4th in the table as they will be looking to push for a place in Europe next season.
Viola score three in San Siro
AC Milan's poor start to the season under Marco Giampaolo continues after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Fiorentina at the San Siro on Sunday. Both teams have had an underwhelming start to Serie A this season as a win was really needed to kick-start the season for both clubs. The Viola were awarded a penalty in the first 15 minutes when Federico Chiesa was brought down in the box and Erick Pulgar converted to give the away side the lead. Milan went down to ten men with Mateo Musacchio receiving his marching orders. Gaetano Castrovilli doubled Fiorentina's lead in the second half and they awarded another penalty but Chiesa missed from the spot. He would later make amends by laying for Franck Ribery, who scored Fiorentina's third. Rafael Leão scored for Milan but did little to limit the damage as Milan drop to 16th in the table after six games while for Fiorentina, they jump to 9th and gotten back to back wins for the first time this season.
