Wednesday's UCL Roundup: Round of 16 (1st Leg)

Giménez and Godín down The Old Lady

Atlético centre-backs José Giménez and Diego Godín were the heroes for Atlético Madrid following a massive 2-0 win against Italian champions Juventus at the Wanda Metropolitano with more discussions about Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Both sides sides have reached the final of the Champions League in the past five years with Juve making a big coup to win the competition with the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has also scored 22 goals against Atléti. Juventus had the first big chance when Leonardo Bonucci who had a free header from a set-piece but went over the crossbar. Diego Costa and Antonie Griezmann had their chances but were unable to score then they scored from substitute Álvaro Morata but was ruled out by VAR. The Rojiblancos finally took the lead from José Giménez with Juve unable to clear their lines from a set-piece allowing the Uruguayan to score. Five minutes later, Diego Godín scored the second from another set-piece. A big win for Atlético as they go to Turin with two goal lead and a clean sheet while Juve's Champions League season is in jeopardy.

Sterling completes City comeback at Gelsenkirchen

Raheem Sterling continues to be Manchester City's go-to guy this season as Manchester City came from behind to beat Bundesliga side Schalke 04 at the VELTINS-Arena. City are one of the favourites to win the competition this season and with the recent form, it's easy to see why while Schalke have struggled this season, 14th in the Bundesliga and are eight points off the relegation playoff spot. Many thought Schalke had a chance and it looked like it when Sergio Agüero put the Premier League champions in front in 18 minutes. Schalke, to their credit, didn't give in and we're awarded a penalty which former Tottenham player Nabil Bentaleb converted to put Schalke back in the game. Then Schalke were awarded another penalty with Bentaleb scoring again to give Schalke an unlikely lead at halftime. City's night looked to be going wrong when Nicolas Otamendi was sent off but substitute Leroy Sané equalized against his former club with a fantastic free-kick from just under 30 yards out then at the 90th minute, City found the winning goal from Raheem Sterling after receiving a long ball from Ederson and slotting it in. A crazy match, Manchester City managed to come through and will be looking to do the business in the second leg while Schalke did put up a good fight, getting a win at the Etihad could be too much but it's football.
