Wednesday's UCl Recap: Round of 16 (1st Leg)

Spurs score three past Dortmund

Tottenham Hotspur pulled out one of their best performances in the Champions League after a resounding 3-0 victory over Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. Spurs had to play without Harry Kane and Dele Alli who were both out due to injury forcing Pochettino to play Lucas Moura and Son Heung-Min upfront. Dortmund had injury troubles of their own with captain Marco Reus out with injury as well as Manuel Akanji, Paco Alcàcer, Julian Weigl and Lukasz Piszczek. Dortmund almost took the lead just at the stroke of halftime when Juan Foyth failed to control the ball and was intercepted by Christian Pulisic but hit the side of the net. Two minutes in the second half, Spurs took the lead from Heung-Min Son when Eriksen intercepted a ball from Hakimi passing it to Jan Vertonghen, who crossed the ball for Son to finish. It was all Spurs after that with Dortmund unable to handle Spurs' pressing and got their second from Vertonghen, who lashed the ball into the back of the net. Fernando Llorente scored the third goal giving Spurs a commanding lead into the second leg at Dortmund in March. As for Dortmund, they will be licking their wounds as their UCL campaign looks dead and buried with nothing short of a miracle to see them through to the quarterfinals.

Asensio snatches win for Madrid

Marco Asensio came off from the bench to grab a late winner as Real Madrid beat Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 at the Johan Cruyff ArenA. It was seen as the battle of the veterans (Real Madrid) who have achieved a lot in Europe, winning four UCL titles in five years, against the talented youthful side of Ajax with the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Matthjis de Ligt. The first half belonged to Ajax, creating chances with Dušan Tadić hitting the post and Hakeem Ziyech denied a goal from Thibaut Courtois. Ajax took the lead from Nicolás Tagliafico but was ruled out after a review from VAR. Real Madrid took the lead in the second half from Karim Benzema who finished off the chance created by Vinicius. Fifteen minutes after, Ajax equalized with Ziyech which was a deserved goal for the Dutch side with how much they created. With Ajax going for it, they were open with their spacing and Madrid capitalizes on that when Dani Carvajal whipped a cross that the Ajax players couldn't get to, allowing Marco Asensio to finish it off. For Madrid, they take two away goals back to Spain for the second leg despite being outplayed for much of the game while Ajax face a daunting task of getting a result at the Bernabéu.
