Tuesday's UCL Roundup: Round of 16 (1st Leg)

The UEFA Champions League continues with another four games this week in the Round of 16 after the other four games from last week. These are the games we live for as fans of the game where every chance, challenge and error could change the game on its head. Here are the reviews from the game on Tuesday night.

Bayern frustrate Liverpool in stalemate

Bayern Munich produced a defensive display against Liverpool in their Round of 16 clash at Anfield that ended 0-0. Despite not being at the top in the Bundesliga, Bayern have come to this game on form as they are closing the gap on Borussia Dortmund but were without Arjen Robben, Thomas Müller and Jerome Boateng for this game. Liverpool, on the other hand, are in a title race as well and had their injury worries as well with Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren out with injury while Virgil van Dijk was suspended with Fabinho deployed at centre-back. The game had very few clear cut chances for both sides with just two shots on target from the entire game, both of those shots were from Liverpool. Credit have to go both defences with Bayern clearly had their aim to nullify Liverpool's attack which they succeeded with Mats Hummels possibly the MOTM and Liverpool's having to play without Virgil van Dijk to keep Robert Lewandowski quiet with the Polish striker making just three of his 31 touches in the penalty box. It's all to play for at the Allianz Arena in the second leg but Bayern will be without Joshua Kimmich due to suspension while Liverpool will have van Dijk back and have almost everyone fit for the game in March.

Barça unable to score at Lyon

Another game that promised a lot in terms of attacking display due to the qualities of both sides, Barcelona were held to a goalless draw against Lyon in their Round of 16 clash at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais last night. Lyon are one of the most exciting teams in Europe with Memphis Depay, Tanguy Ndombele, Nabil Fekir and Houssem Aouar. Barcelona, on the other hand, are on a quest to win the Champions League this season and despite the talent in the squad, they still rely a lot on Lionel Messi to get them through games this season. The Catalans had a lot of shots in the game. Twenty fives to be exact. The problem was that they went unable to get a lot of them on target with Rakitić, Messi, Dembélé, Busquets and Suárez all having chances that either went out wide or stopped by Lopes. Luis Suárez had a poor night in France as he yet to score in the Champions League this season. Lyon desire a lot of credit in keeping Barça at bay whilst creating chances themselves. Despite the draw, the game is still in Barça's favour with the second leg at the Camp Nou in March but the supporting cast in Barça particularly Suárez have to step up if Barcelona can go far in this competition.
