Pochettino: United's Preferred Choice?

Unless you have been living under a rock or with no internet over the past 24 hours, you would have heard that Manchester United have sacked José Mourinho yesterday and have already appointed former Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjær as their interim manager for the rest of the season.

Now, the search for the next permanent manager has begun with some managers like Zinedine Zidane, Leonardo Jardim, Antonio Conte, Laurent Blanc and Maxi Allegri as the top picks to succeed Mourinho. However, one person that has been talked about a lot to take the Old Trafford job is Spurs Manager Mauricio Pochettino.

When speaking on SkySports yesterday, Gary Neville spoke on Pochettino as 'the best candidate' for the United job for the following reasons. His promotion of youth, attractive brand of football and his ability to win games. These are good reasons for getting the Argentine particularly to develop a side that will compete for the coming years. While many would say that Poch hasn't win any major silverware at North London, he has clearly taken Spurs to a level that the other top sides take Spurs very seriously and has been sustainable in taking Spurs to the Champions League on a regular basis.

  • His promotion and faith in youth would fit United wants. United are famed for bringing up young players from the Class of 1992 to modern day examples like Marcus Rashford. He has overseen the development of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Winks who are now mainstays for both Spurs and the England national team. He is also a good man-manager who United need at this moment as he can put a shoulder round his players for encouragement.

With how Spurs are performing this season with a small squad as compared to other teams in the top 4 with no additions from the summer, Poch is making Spurs punch above their weight which has been the case for years now being consistent in the Champions League and taking Spurs to their highest points tally in Premier League history (16/17, 86 points). All on a shoe horn budget.

Many Spurs will be angry if Poch goes and understandably so. He has been the man behind Spurs' best years in the Premier League and if Daniel Levy supports Pochettino's ambitions, I don't see him moving to Old Trafford. However, odd things have happened and that possibility will not go away and United will have to pay big as well. United are clearly preparing for the long run with talks of getting a director of football to work with the new permanent manager but of all the candidates available, Pochettino seems to be the right choice.
