League Action From The Weekend
Merry Christmas to you all 🎄🎄🎄. The
football doesn't stop with the last weekend's action as we are now the halfway point as the winter break approaches. Here are the highlights from the weekend.
The Eagles silence the Etihad
With Liverpool beating Wolves on Friday to go four points clear off the top of the Premier League, Manchester City had to cut the deficit to a point when they faced Crystal Palace at the Etihad. However, Crystal Palace earned a shock 3-2 win with goals Jeremy Schlupp, Luka Milivojević and a wondrous strike from Andros Townsend. It was City's first home defeat in the league this season as they played without Fernandinho and David Silva highlighting their importance. They would have to hope that Liverpool drop points before facing them on January 3rd which could be important in the title race.
Ole, Ole United
Manchester United's caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær earned a perfect start as Manchester United thrashed Cardiff City 5-1 to start life without Mourinho. Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial were amongst the goals while Jesse Lingard got a brace killing off the Bluebirds. Paul Pogba had a fine showing setting up two goals as United scored five goals for the first time since May 2013 which was Sir Alex Ferguson's last game. With some favourable games, United can build some momentum going to the second half of the season.
Barça stay clear with win
Barcelona continue to stay top of the table in La Liga after beating Celta Vigo 2-0 at the Camp Nou. It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Catalans but it was an efficient performance with Ousmane Dembélé scoring his 7th league goal of the season. Lionel Messi scored his 15th goal in La Liga this season to give Barça a two goal lead. Celta did have their chances but were wasteful having just one shot of their 11 on target. It was an efficient win as Barcelona are still there points clear off Atletico Madrid.
Ribery brace cut the gap
Franck Ribery rolled back the years with a fine performance as Bayern Munich beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 to cut the gap from Borussia Dortmund to six points. The Bavarians stamped the authority in the game having 62% possession and having seven of their nine shots on target. Franck Ribery scored a brace taking his goal tally to 5 in all competitions with Rafinha scored late to give Bayern some confidence going into the winter break.
The Old Lady go eight points clear
Juventus continue their unbeaten run in Serie A after beating AS Roma at the Juventus Stadium. Roma have struggled this season in Serie A with only 24 points from their 16 league games. Juventus dominate the game but could only muster one goal from Croatian forward Mario Mandužkić in the first half with Cristiano Ronaldo really wasteful in his shooting having just 3 shots from 10 on target. Juve also had a goal from Giorgio Chiellini which was disallowed after a review from VAR. However, it didn't matter as The Old Lady have a near flawless record with two games left before the winter break.
Lazio go fourth
Staying in the Serie A, Lazio moved to fourth place in the table after beating Cagliari with AC Milan losing to Fiorentia. Le Aquile were effective particularly from set-pieces and counter attacks. Sergej Milinković-Savić opened the scoring with Senad Lulic and Francesco Acerbi scoring as well. It was an important win from Lazio as their top four hopes still in contention with Bolgona and Torino their next fixtures before the winter break.
Real Madrid win Club World Cup
Real Madrid ended their 2018 with another piece of silverware as they won the FIFA Club World Cup beating Al Ain 4-1. Luka Modrić, Marcos Llorente, Sergio Ramos and an own goal from Yahia Nader ensured Madrid's year ended with some positivity after winning the Champions League for the third time in a row in May this year and a first piece of silverware for Santiago Solari. They resume their league action with a trip to Villarreal on the 3rd of January.
Player of the Weekend: Son Heung-Min
All of Spurs'attacking quartet scored in their 6-2 hammering of Everton. While each one of them had a great game, the standout of the four was the South Korean forward Son Heung-Min. Son scored a brace and an assist. He also had 46 touches, 4 shots (3 on target), 84.4% pass accuracy and 2 key passes. They will heavily miss him when goes for the Asian Cup with South Korea.
