Boxing Day Football Recap
Hope you all had a great Christmas day. The football season continues to go on with the Premier League and the Serie A as they had the Boxing Day matches yesterday. Here's a recap of that
Liverpool consolidate their lead
Liverpool stayed top of the Premier League table extending their lead from Manchester City to seven points after beating Newcastle United 4-0 at Anfield. The Reds went in front from Dejan Lovren scoring from a strong volley. After that it was smooth sailing with Mohamed Salah scoring from the penalty spot, Xherdan Shaqiri scoring and Fabinho scoring his first Liverpool goal off the bench. Liverpool remain unbeaten and have won their last eight games. Now they have tough clashes against Arsenal at home and a very big clash with Manchester City at the Etihad on January 3rd.
Ronaldo keeps Juventus unbeaten
Cristiano Ronaldo played his role as a super-sub scoring as Juventus drew against Atalanta 2-2. Maxi Allegri dropped the Portuguese for the game with Douglas Costa, Mario Mandužkic and Paulo Dybala leading the forward line. Things went well as The Old Lady went in front with an own goal from Berat Djimsiti. However, La Dea got themselves in through Duvan Zapata scoring Juve down to 10 men as Rodrigo Bentancur sent off. Ronaldo was brought in and saved Juve's blemishes from defeat as Juventus have dropped just four points this season but will be lucky they got something from the game against Atalanta.
City lose back-to-back
Few weeks back, everyone thought where were City going to lose from given great they where. Now, things have changed. City have now experienced back-to-back defeats losing against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium dropping to third in the Premier League table. The Cityzens scored first from Bernando Silva but it lasted just five minutes with Marc Albrighton scoring the equaliser. Since then, City couldn't handle the pressure of Leicester which the Foxes were rewarded with a winner from Ricardo Pereira. City have now lost more games than they had last season and have to bounce back fast with a rejuvenated Southampton and a title race clash against Liverpool.
Milan go blank
AC Milan are having their troubles finding the back of the net after a poor goalless draw against Frosinone. The Rossoneri had more shots than their opponents but Frosinone were more efficient with the chances they had, hurting Milan on the counter. Gonzalo Huigaín had a poor showing having just one shot from his six on target and hasn't scored in his last nine league games. Now, Milan are sixth in Serie A, three points behind 4th placed Lazio and haven't scored in their last four league games with pressure now on Gennaro Gattuso.
Spurs enter the title race
With all the talk on Liverpool and Manchester City for the title, Spurs have quietly entered the picture going second after beating Bournemouth 5-0 at Wembley. They played without Dele Alli but it didn't affect the Lilywhites with Son Heung-Min continuing his fine form scoring twice with Kyle Walker-Peters making three assists while Eriksen, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane all going in the scoresheet. Spurs have now won seven of their last eight leagues games with confident fixtures against Wolves and Cardiff.
Inter beat 9-men Lazio
Inter Milan closed the gap from Napoli to 5 points as they won 1-0. Both teams came to the game with relatively good form but it was a very physical one with Napoli going down to nine men in the game with Lorenzo Insigne getting a straight red and Kalidou Koulibaly after getting two yellow cards who also reported racial abuse towards him. Lautaro Martínez scored the winner late in added time to give Inter a good win.
Player of Boxing Day: Paul Pogba
Paul Pogba played well in United's 5-1 win against Cardiff City but took it up a bit in United's 3-1 win against Huddersfield. The enigmatic French midfielder looked to have found has mojo making 116 touches, 85.6% pass accuracy, 2 tackles, 3 interceptions, 5 shots (4 shots on target), 3 key passes and two goals. Looks like his old self.
