Tuesday's UCL Roundup: Matchday 3
The UEFA Champions League made its return this week as we're now halfway into the group stages as teams are either getting points to keep their chances of going through alive or consolidating their place for the knockout stages. Teams from Group E to H played on Tuesday with the biggest game being Manchester United hosting Juventus which the Serie A champions won 1-0. Real Madrid, Roma, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Ajax all secured wins while Valencia and Lyon dropped points. Here are the major stories from Tuesday's results.
Ronaldo's Return to Old Trafford
The anticipation of United playing against Juventus was on the return of former United player Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford as a Juventus player. The Portuguese was the provider for Paulo Dybala who scored his 4th UCL goal this season. Ronaldo was no doubt the centre of attention before and during the game with pitch invaders attempting to reach him during and after the game. For Juventus, they're top in group H with 9 points with a strong position of going through while Manchester United remain second with 4 points with their next UCL against Juventus in Turin.
Real back to winning ways
Defending champions Real Madrid managed to get their first win in five games in all competitions with a 2-1 against Plzen. have found it difficult to score having gone through their second longest goal drought ever before Marcelo scored in their defeat to Levante during the weekend. The Brazilian was on the scoresheet again with Karim Benzema scoring his 57th UCL career goal overtaking Ruud van Nistelrooy in the process. This keeps Madrid top in group G with 6 points and would ease some pressure on Lopetegui before El Clasico on Sunday.
Attack play at the Rhein-Neckar Arena
Probably the most exciting game for the neutral was Hoffenheim's crazy 3-3 draw against Lyon. The attack from both sides were on song but left a lot to be desired at the back. The Bundesliga side had to come from behind twice with Joelinton scoring the equaliser deep in added time to salvage a point having been down 3-2 with Depay, Traoré and Ndombele scoring for the French side. This leaves Die Kraichgauer third on 2 points while OL remain second with 5 points.
