Liverpool and Manchester City share the points as Mahrez misses penalty
Manchester City will be thinking what could have been when Riyad Mahrez missed his penalty blowing away a big opportunity of a first win in 15 years at Anfield as Manchester City and Liverpool played to a goalless draw. Billed as a game that was hyped as an attacking end-to-end encounter, there was little to separate both sides as the game was more dogged with both sides refusing to give away any chances.
In all honesty, the game wasn’t great with poor displays in the final third of the pitch with only two shots on target from 10 shots in that game. Liverpool played their usually high pressing game but just created a number of half-chances while City went cautious aiming to nullify Liverpool’s front three and frustrate the Anfield crowd which worked but affected their attack in sustaining chances for themselves.
There were a number of penalty for the Citizens when Sergio Agüero was brought down by Dejan Lovren and another between Fernandinho and Virgil van Dijk. City were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute when Virgil van Dijk brought down Leroy Sane in the 18-yard area. Riyad Mahrez stepped up but missed his stop-kick missing the target. Eventually, a point was what both sides would have wanted but will be disappointed not to get all three points. This leaves both sides level on points with 20 with City topping the table just on goal difference.
The real winner of the Liverpool-Man City game was Chelsea as the Blues are level on points with both of them after beating Southampton 3-0. Eden Hazard continued his blistering form netting his 7th goal of the season. Ross Barkley played a starring role providing an assist for Hazard as well as getting a goal for himself before Alvaro Morata scored Chelsea’s third to seal a comprehensive win for Maurizio Sarri as the Blues are looking more like title contenders that can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool.
Arsenal made it eight wins in a row in all competitions beating Fulham 5-1 to go fourth in the league table. Alexandre Lacazette has in fine form scoring a brace taking his goal tally to six goals. His strike partner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started on the bench but came on to devastating effect.
He supplied a cross for Aaron Ramsey who scored with a cheeky back-heel. The Gabonese forward later got two goals for himself as the Gunners have scored in every league game since their opening day defeat against Manchester City. For Fulham, their defensive woes continue as they’ve conceded the most goals of anyone in the league. For the Cottagers chances to stay up, they have to do better defensively which could compromise their possession-based gameplay which got them to the top flight.
