League action from the weekend
A new week comes the chatter's review of the major talking points from the weekend starting with:
Barcelona giving Real a new one
It was a nightmare for Real Madrid yesterday as they lost to their hated rivals Barcelona 5-1 at the Camp Nou. It was expected with Madrid's recent form but the manner of the defeat was so bad, there will be news regarding Julen Lopetegui's future this week. Goals from Coutinho, Vidal and a hat-trick from Luis Suárez gave Barça a commanding victory without Lionel Messi. Barcelona remain top in La Liga with 21 points while Los Blancos drop to 9th in the table closer to the relegation zone than the top of the table. Drastic measures ahead for Real.
Liverpool go top
Liverpool went top of the table in the Premier League this weekend after beating Cardiff City 4-1 at Anfield. Goals from Mohamed Salah, a brace from Sadio Mane and a first Liverpool goal from Xherdan Shaqiri ensured three points for the Reds as Manchester City play tonight against Spurs. Liverpool remain unbeaten at home since March 2017 and have their best start after 10 games since 2008/09 where they got 26 points from their first 10 games. The Reds go marching on.
Arsenal winning streak ends
Arsenal's winning streak from 11 games in all competitions came to an end as the Gunners dropped points against Crystal Palace away after a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park. The Eagles opened the scoring with Luka Milivojevic scoring from the penalty spot in the first half. In the second half, the Gunners came to life as they went in front from Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, Xhaka playing at right-back, brought down Wilfried Zaha as he conceded a penalty which Milivojevic slotted in. The Gunners remain 4th in the table while Palace are 14th without a home win in five games.
Dortmund drop points, Bayern catch up
Bayern Munich are slowly getting back on track as they go second in the Bundesliga following a 2-1 win against Mainz. Goals from Leon Goretzka and Thiago pushed Kovac's men two points behind Dortmund. Speaking of Dortmund, they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Hertha Berlin. Jadon continued his fine form scoring a brace but Salomon Kalou spoiled the party scoring a brace with his second coming in added time in the second half. Hertha's fine start this season continues as they're on 6th place, one point off the UCL spots. Contenders for European places this season?
Ronaldo brace gives Juve win
Cristiano Ronaldo was at it again for Juventus scoring a brace giving Juventus a scrappy 2-1 win against Empoli. The Old Lady were behind with Francesco Caputo opened the scoring in the first half but they dig deep with their Portuguese superstar. Ronaldo made things level from the penalty spot then scored the winner in the 70th minute with a stunning strike from 25 metres. That takes Ronaldo's goal tally to seven in the league as Juve remain unbeaten in Serie A dropping points just once and are six points ahead of Napoli.
Tragedy at Leicester
There was sad news from the weekend as a helicopter crashed outside the King Power Stadium in Leicester after their 1-1 draw against West Ham. The helicopter belonged to the owner of Leicester City, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Sadly, him and four other people on board didn't survive the crash which was confirmed from the club yesterday. The football world mourned and poured tributes to the man who helped Leicester achieve the impossible in winning the Premier League two years ago. May they rest in peace.
