League Action from the Weekend

With league football back after the international break, here are the major stories from the weekend's action

Chelsea ruin Mourinho's day

Chelsea faced Manchester United on Saturday with many believing that United stood little chance of beating the Blues at Stamford Bridge with United already seven points behind top spot. However, with Chelsea scoring first from Antonio Rüdiger, Anthony Martial scored a brace in the second half with United looking to seal their first win at the Bridge in 10 games but Ross Barkley scored from the last kick of the game to rescue a point. The fallout from the equaliser brought a row between Mourinho and Chelsea coach Marco Ianni as the Portuguese had to be restrained by the stewards. Chelsea remain unbeaten with 21 points while United have won just one in their last five games in all competitions with Juventus coming up.

City and Liverpool Remain Top

Liverpool and Manchester City remain top of the league and unbeaten with the Citizens top on goal difference after their wins. City smashed Burnley 5-0 with goals from Agüero, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Sané and Mahrez. There was also the return of Kevin De Bruyne who has been out since August with injury. Liverpool, however, we're made to work for their win beating Huddersfield 1-0 from Mohamed Salah. The Reds have made their best start ever defensively conceding just 3 goals from their nine league games marking a big improvement as they conceded 10 more at this stage last season.

No Messi for El Clasico

Barcelona returned to winning wins beating Sevilla 4-2 to go top of the league. Goals from Messi, Coutinho, Suárez and Rakitic ensured three points for the Catalans with a remarkable display from Marc-Andre ter Stegen who was the best performer for the winners with some key saves. However, the victory became sour as Messi was taken off with an arm fracture ruling him out for their UCL game against Inter and the El Clasico on Sunday. The question now would be can Barcelona perform without their Argentine maestro given how dependent they are on him? The likes of Malcom, Dembele, Coutinho and Suárez will have to step up.

No goals on sight for Real

Real Madrid have struggled to find the back of the net with no goals from their last four games in all competitions, losing three of those games. Their woes in front of goal continued losing to Levante 2-1 at the Bernabéu. Levante managed to score from their two shots on target from Madrid's 12 with Marcelo breaking Madrid's longest goal drought in their history. The result leaves Lopetegui on the edge with speculation surfacing that he'll be sacked before El Clasico on Sunday. Los Blancos clearly miss the goals of Ronaldo but with no one brought to replace the Portuguese, this is on them.

BVB put four past Stuttgart

Dortmund's blistering start to the Bundesliga continued as they beat Stuttgart 4-0 to remain top of the table. This was the first time that Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Paco Alcácer started together with them scoring a goal each within 25 minutes. Maxi Philipp scored late in the second half giving BVB a convincing win with an exciting front line that have scored 27 league goals. Eight more than second place Gladbach and 12 more than Bayern. Can they keep this up? We'll have to see.

Icardi with another late winner

The Milan Derby took place in Serie A with Mauro Icardi stepping up to the plate with another late winner as Inter beat their city rivals AC Milan 1-0 at the San Siro. The game itself, had very few chances with only five shots on target. With the game looking to end in a disappointing draw, Inter captain Mauro Icardi capitalizes on an error from Donnarumma scoring late in the second half to take all three points. That leaves Inter third in Serie A while Milan stuck in the bottom half which is looking to be another poor season for the Rossoneri.
