4 Things from the Premier League Yesterday

With European football taken place during mid-week, league action in the Premier League resumed with Matchday 6. Fulham played Watford to a 1-all draw at Craven Cottage at the 12:30 kick-off. Six games where played at the 3pm kick-off time which included Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City. Liverpool and Manchester City got easy wins while Manchester United dropped points against Wolves. Newcastle United against Crystal Palace was goalless, Leicester City beat Huddersfield 3-1 while Burnley got their first win of the season with a remarkable 4-0 win over Bournemouth. The last game was Spurs going to Brighton where they got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory. Here are the four things from yesterday’s action.

Wolves: Giant Killers?

Wolves dominated the Championship last season with their attacking brand of football that many hoped would continue in the Premier League. That would be difficult especially going up against the top sides in the league. Despite Wolves taking a slight cautious approach to those games, Wolves don’t sit back and hope for the best. Wolves so far, have managed to take points against Manchester City and Manchester United with credible performances to show for it. Against United, Wolves managed to get eight of their 11 shots on target with João Moutinho scoring the equalizer with a strong shot. Wolves wont dominate like they did last season with better competition but will cause problems for many this season, especially with the top 6.

Emphatic First Win for Burnley

Burnley were one of four sides in the league that was yet to win a game so far this season. They have scored just three goals before yesterday’s game and have conceded 10 goals which is in contrast to how Sean Dyche set his team up. However, the Clarets finally got a win and it was a big one. They beat Bournemouth 4-0 ending a four game losing streak to climb off the foot of the table. Matej Vydra and Aaron Lennon were on the scoresheet while Ashley Barnes bagged a brace. The Clean sheet was also important as Burnley have kept just one clean sheet in their last 15 PL games away from home. For the Cherries, it was a disappointing defeat after a fine start to the season getting 10 points in their five games.

Agüero Scores in 300th game

Manchester City got back to winning ways after their defeat to Lyon in the Champions League with a 5-0 rout against Cardiff City. Riyad Mahrez got his first two goals for the club while Bernando Silva and Ilkay Gündogan got in the scoresheet. It was a dominant performance from the Citizens with 10 of their 21 shots on target and having 79% ball possession leaving Cardiff City powerless. However, the game was about Sergio Agüero. The Argentine made his 300th game for the club and marked the occasion with a goal. The goal also puts him in the top 10 all-time scorers in Premier League history with 147 goals behind Les Ferdinand who has 149 goals. After signing a contract extension a few days ago, he’ll likely extend that.

Shaqiri makes eventful cameo

Jürgen Klopp made changes surprised very few from their action in the Champions League. Xherdan Shaqiri finally made full debut since his move from Stoke City and showed how effective he can be. The Swiss didn’t have the fanfare as Naby Këita or Alisson but had a presence in the game, tormenting the Saint’s defence and had a hand with two goals. The first was an own goal by Wesley Hoedt and the second was a free-kick which Mohamed Salah scored from a rebound. Joël Matip also made his first start to the season and marked it with a goal from a corner from Tent Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool have now recorded their best start to a season ever with seven straight wins and are the fifth team in Premier League history to start the season with six straight wins. The quality is there as well as the depth.
