4 Things From the Premier League yesterday
The Premier League is finally back after the international break as Matchday 5 started with the biggest game of the weekend as Liverpool faced Tottenham at Wembley in the 12:30 kickoff. Chelsea and Watford were looking to continue their 100 percent start with Chelsea facing Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge while Watford faced Manchester United. Arsenal travelled to face Newcastle, Manchester City faced Fulham at the Etihad with the defending champions unstoppable at home, Bournemouth faced Leicester City and Huddersfield Town were up against Crystal Palace. Here are the four things learned from yesterday’s games.
Liverpool passed their toughest test (so far)
Liverpool returned to action with a tough run of games ahead of them and it started with Tottenham at Wembley. Liverpool last year, were battered by their opponents 4-1 and with their poor record against the top 6 away from home last season, this was a test where Liverpool needed to pass in proving their title credentials and they did. Liverpool were better than their top 6 rival controlling the game and creating chances which Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino pounced to give Liverpool an important 2-1 win. Jurgen Klopp’s side have the perfect start to a season since 1990/91 conceding just twice in their five games showing the improvement they have made since the Spurs defeat last year. With the Champions League coming up as well as games against Chelsea and Manchester City, this was the start that they could have asked for.
Watford perfect start ends
Watford are having the perfect start to the season, winning their first four games including a 2-1 win against Spurs before the international break but their dream start ended with a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United. United on the other hand, have had an indifferent start to the season with 6 points from a possible 12 with a lot of uncertainty at Old Trafford surrounding Mourinho and his relationship with the players. However, the United players clearly stepped up with Paul Pogba and David De Gea back at their best. Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling got the goals for the Red Devils before a goal from Andre Gray made things tense but United got the win and could now build on this win to close the gap on their noisy neighbours.
Hazard is rocking it
Eden Hazard is having a fantastic start under Maurizio Sarri. The Belgian was the center of attention following Chelsea’s 4-1 win against Cardiff City. Hazard light up the show scoring his second Premier League hat-trick as he’s made 7 goal contributions (5 goals and 2 assists) in just 2/3 league starts. Chelsea on the other hand, make it 5 over 5 as they top the league table on goal difference. The Blues overpowered their opponents in shots, shots on target, possession, passes and pass accuracy as it was a one-sided contest. For Hazard, this could be the season where he’s fully unleashed which will be a nightmare for everyone. The Belgian has been tamed by Mourinho and Conte neglecting his attacking flair so both managers were structure heavy but with an attacking manager in Sarri, Hazard can finally express himself with no qualms.
Silva scores No.50 in City win
David Silva completed a milestone scoring his 50th Premier League goal in City’s 3-0 home win against Fulham. The defending champions started off without Benjamin and Gabriel Jesus while Leroy Sane made his first start of the season. Sane started things off scoring in just 2 minutes in the clock before Silva scored in the 21st minute. For Silva, it’s a milestone as he has been a huge contributor to City’s success since joining the club in 2011 from Valencia. Raheem Sterling rounded things up with a goal of his own in the second half giving City a comfortable win. City are 3rd on the table, two points behind Chelsea and Liverpool while Fulham have just 4 points from their games so far.
