4 Things from the Premier League Today.

Six games were played today for Match-day 3 of the Premier League. Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers as they defending champions dropped points for the first time this season. Some teams were naughty for the referee to take action as four reds were shown today. Two in the game between Everton and AFC Bournemouth with Richarlison and Adam Smith receiving their marching orders. Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town remain winless with a goalless draw while Arsenal got their first win of the season at home against West Ham United. Liverpool took advantage of City dropping points winning 1-0 against Brighton to top the table. Here are the four things learned from today’s action.

Wolves frustrate the holders

Wolves are hyped up following their exploits at the Championship but in the Premier League, you’re in a big pond going against the big fish which they have faced with 1 point from a possible 6 in their 2 games. So not many fancied their chances against the defending champions Manchester City but Wolves surely held their own against Pep Guardiola and his team. Wolves’ manager Nuno Espirito Santo perfectly set up to frustrate the Citizens as well as pressing them high up to get chances. City still dominated with both possession and attempts on goal but were behind after Willy Boly put Wolves in front despite the controversy of the goal with Boly touching the ball with his ball before entering the net. Aymeric Laporte equalized to savage a point before it was a frustrating day for Pep but a well-earned point for Wolves at the Molineux.

Cardiff and Huddersfield need goals

Both Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town are tipped as the teams likely to go down this season with Cardiff as the most unfancied of the three promoted teams while Huddersfield Town survived with the skin of their teeth scoring just 28 goals last season. Both teams have not started off the season well with Cardiff looking a first win while Huddersfield have lost twice already. The game itself is not something to write about the as the game ended goalless with just five shots on target from the 19 shots in total from both sides. Huddersfield also ended the game with ten men with Jonathan Hogg getting sent off. Goals are important in surviving a relegation battle long into the season and where the goals will come from for both teams is up in the air. Goals win games.

Arsenal gets scrappy win

Unai Emery finally got his first win as Arsenal boss with the Gunners beating West Ham United 3-1. Both sides were looking to get their first win of the season losing in their two league games. Emery dropped Mesut Ozil from the match-day squad while Jack Wilshere made an emotional return to the Emirates after leaving Arsenal on a free transfer. Marko Arnautovic put the Hammers in front before Nacho Monreal equalized. Both sides were guilty of wasting possession and chances to get a foothold in the game. Issa Diop unfortunately scored an own goal putting Arsenal in front before Danny Welbeck scored Arsenal’s third late in stoppage time sealing all three points. Emery got the three points but still looking for his preferred side.

Three in Three for Liverpool

Liverpool were looking to take advantage of City dropping points with their league game against Brighton. Liverpool won their game 1-0 from Mohamed Salah but it wasn’t a vintage performance from the Reds. Brighton, buoyed from their 3-2 win against Manchester United last weekend, knew the Reds will dominate so it was just damage control and anything else is a bonus. The front three of Salah, Firmino and Mane weren’t at their best with Liverpool’s defence being called upon to handle the chances Brighton will get. Liverpool’s defence has improved from the start of the calendar year with Virgil van Dijk as well as the new goalkeeper Alisson who made a key save in the dying minutes of the game. If Liverpool are to challenge City, their defence will be called upon in games like these which the Reds struggled with last season.
